[My Weekender] with Tomer Oz

Jan 14th, 2011

Israeli expat Tomer Oz is a Shanghai-based Muay Thai instructor at his gym, Oz Body Fit. Along with that, over the past few years he’s made forays into filmdom, working as an extra in the Jackie Chan/ Jet Li movie, Forbidden Kingdom, as well as appearing in John Rabe, a Hollywood movie starring Steve Buscemi.

The weekend for me is the only day of the week that my body can rest so I generally try to use it by being lazy… but not too lazy…

This weekend, actually, I've got nothing much to do except wait. I've auditioned for a movie role in a martial arts movie. The role is fighting Jackie Chan, so I'm very excited to find out if I've got the part or not. I should get the answer this weekend or next weekend, I hope.

My typical weekend morning starts with coffee and cooking a breakfast. I never make it on time to get a breakfast meal in a restaurant. But to treat myself, I like going to Baker & Spice bakery for a nice sandwich and some chocolate cake. I don't drink or smoke, so I figure I can at least eat what I want.

Sometimes on the weekend I go to my gym to train. I work with other people during the week teaching classes, so I like to use weekends to hit the bags and focus on myself when I can. Sport is my way of gaining balance in my life. Everything makes sense to me when I'm working out. If I don't have any plans, I just head to my gym on weekends, just to fix it up and try to improve on the facilities. If you're looking for the best work-out ever, I welcome you to come down.

In the evenings, I like to take dinner at a restaurant -- Maya or sometimes Latina. I love their all-you-can-eat buffet. I don't go out that much, but these days I'm trying to socialize more often. I end up at M1NT if I go out. Recently, I tried Drop, which was a nice place to be also.

Any good reason to meet good friends… sometimes we go to the indoor ski stadium in Xinjuang. I like snowboarding and when you live in Shanghai, it's the only place to go... to bad it's closed for now.

Sometimes just walking on the street of Shanghai is a nice thing. This city is always changing and there are so many things to see and cool shops to go to. Shanghai is one of my favorite cities in the world. If you want to be surrounded by millions of people, you can, and if you want to be alone, you can find that also.

The energy is good in this city and I am happy to be here.

Have a good weekend...
