LAN on the Bund

Talk of the town,
LAN, seems to be making a solid bid to be a contender on the Bund with four opulent floors of restaurant/club extravagance. Created by the group behind
South Beauty (and LAN in Beijing), the venue boasts an enormity to get lost in: a dramatic entry, vaulted ceilings, illuminated champagne wall, jellyfish tank, and indoor garden, among other diversions.
It should be interesting to see peoples' reactions to this newcomer, obviously going the "bigger is better, gargantuan is best" route. It properly enters the Shanghai party scene in September, but it¡¯s already seeing a couple big nights.
Including one tonight called
1st Series Party, which they're selling as their "inagueral event." DJs Razor and Sam Basil with VJ Hutch getting all palatial. No cover.
Pier One Reopens
So
Pier One -- the multipurpose complex on Suzhou Creek -- is "soft opening" tonight, with a scheduled launch around September. The restaurant downstairs is now called Pier One (it used to be called "Mimosa"), and according to marketing manager Sunny its "a lot more affordable." The rooftop bar, which used to be called Monsoon, is now V Bar, and apparently caters to a local dice-happy crowd. The club area (used to be "Minx") is now a private function room, but they might turn it into a jazz club because hey, why not?
So that's what's going on over there. You're welcome.
JZ School Upcoming Classes
The
JZ School -- specializing in bringing you tomorrow's jazz geniuses today -- has released a few of their community events listings for August. Among their on-going classes are a few free one-off workshops open to the community led by the JZ School teachers. All you have to do is RSVP to Mei at 5403-6475 to book your spot (space is limited).
Anyways you should head on over to their web page
here to check out if you want to get in on any of these. Highlights from the list include a jazz repertoire workout on August 2, in which classic jazz staples (¡°Satin Doll," "Billie's Bounce," and "Blue Bossa") will be taught, and a jazz workshop concentrating on Afro-Cuban, Gnwana (North African), and Mazurka (Polish) influences led by Cedric Hanriot on August 3.
They've also got information regarding on-going programs for kids, including a "Peter Pan" musical theatre workshop with classes and a performance scheduled for September.
Z-Trip @ The Shelter in August
One of the world's biggest (in the phatest sense) DJs, Z-Trip will be performing at

The Arizona native made his major label debut in 2005 on Hollywood records ("Shifting Gears"), which featured Chester Bennington (that clown from Lincoln Park), Chuck D, and Busdriver.
Anyone see Busdriver at
4 Live last year?
Anyways, if you liked that Cut Chemist show at The Shelter last month (or two months ago) you should clear your calendars for this one. Cover is 60rmb.
