Bar Rouge is the most famous club in Shanghai, and sets the standard for Bund nightlife, with its terrace view, classy, sleek interiors and iconic French-Shanghai identity. Bar Rouge kicks off the weekend early with themed parties on Thursdays (see SmSh's Upcoming Listings for details) and always runs early in the morning on Friday and Saturday. A must-visit for out-of-towners sampling the high end of Shanghai nightlife.

A surprisingly international DJ roster, as well as local favorites, caters to the young, die-hard partiers that pack Bonbon most nights of the week seeking out their every night all-you-can-drink deal. Showing some wear over the years, Bonbon is still a no-brainer for a hedonistic, action-packed, booze-fueled weekend.

Mint put house music on the map in Shanghai a couple years ago and although they are branching out with hip hop and mash ups to appeal to changing tastes in Shanghai, Mint still packs them in for their popular Wednesday Ladies Nights and on Fridays. Both the bar and the dance floor can get a little cramped, but they also have a nice terrace, and Mint is still a hot spot for younger European expats and locals.

Easily one of the top three clubbing destinations in Shanghai, Attica is one of Shanghai's only successful megaclubs, offering two party rooms, international DJs every weekend and a massive terrace overlooking the Huang Pu River. Attica is the ideal destination for out of town guests seeking a memorable Shanghai clubbing experience. Flip-flops not permitted.

Owned by a Hong Kong film star, Volar originally penned as an exclusive member's only club but has recently made moves to appeal to a younger Hip Hop / Dance crowd on the weekends. As one of the nicest designed bars in Shanghai, and as a provider of some of the finer quality of cocktails, Volar is popular with the richer nightlife set.

A staple of the Italian community Club MAO on Dongping Lu packs in the clubbers every weekend for their themed parties. Expects lots of heavy thump-thump-thump Euro electro and the models that frequently come with that style of club. This one stays open real late with the dance floor packed until 7am. It's usually free entrance for ladies with men left with a cover charge and a free drink for their troubles.

A big hit with locals and expats alike, music focuses on everything between house and trance. G-Plus is one of the few clubs in the city that bring in int'l talent mid-week with their popular Wednesday night parties, but you can count on big names at the weekend too.

Muse Group's second home located in the Plaza 66 mall, M2 is a testament to the luxurious immoderation of Shanghai's nightlife market. Prepare to spend big in this see-and-be-seen temple of image while rubbing elbows with the city's nouveau riche and the occasional Hong Kong celebrity. The club hosts some of the better local and int'l DJ talent, but whether the crowd recognizes this or even cares is up for debate.
