  • Knowing where to go for a Sunday Brunch in Shanghai has always been a quandary, do you go with the full blown singing, all dancing and acrobats of the long-established venues or the ever-evolving and newer hotels that Shanghai has to offer for their Brunch.

    As I am sure one knows, Brunch is a linguistic blend of words, Brunch is a combination of breakfast and lunch eaten usually during the late morning to early afternoon, and regularly has some form of alcoholic drink (most usually champagne or a cocktail and wines served with it).

    On this occasion, our group of long-standing Shanghai hands, opted for the W hotel, and their “social retox brunch” partly as they were offering free flow of Veuve Clicquot champagne, which is one of my favourite go-to of champagnes, well it is pretty consistent, sadly a pity they could not bring the offering of food to a similar level.

    You can’t go wrong with shucked oysters, precooked prawns, scallops, crayfish, platted assortments of cold cuts, perhaps if they were presented better, one might disagree with me.

    The main course selection was, well uninspiring, meat, meat, meat or salmon, and overcooked risotto cake, all of which lacked seasoning

    The saving grace was the selection of desserts and dare I say bog standard selection of cheeses, that you can find anywhere in Shanghai.

    Other than the free flow of Veuve Clicquot champagne, both the white and red wines on offer were ok.

    Bearing in mind that W Hotels are a luxury hotel chain and generally marketed towards a younger age group of folks, the ambience that’s created aka noise/level of music was over the top, along with the wandering singer.

    The service from the wait staff was impeccable, friendly and authentic, for 688RMB per person, I would rather have gone elsewhere for what was basically a set lunch.
