Located in the former site of China's first YWCA, Light & Salt comprises several concepts. First and foremost is a restaurant by the name of Miss Ding's Dining, which features contemporary renditions of European cuisine with Shanghainese accents. It's broad range of flavors—anything from miso cod with sweet potato puree to Shanghai style-tonkatsu. A speakeasy lounge called The Library Distillery makes craft cocktails. And a bookstore by the name of L&S Books doubles as a wine bar by night.

So we decided to try this place on a friday night after a hard week of work.

At the entrance, the waitress ask us if we wanted the set menu or the a la carte, strangely she decides to make us browse the menu while standing at the entrance instead of directing us to a table. Then she brings us to a table on that tiny mezzanine that people keep banging their heads on the ceiling. Not that I am that tall neither! Looking down at the floor, it was mainly empty with 3-4 tables free. We had to request to get one of those tables as obviously the reserved table guest wasn't coming.

Then comes to the food, went through 4 waiters and all of them didn't have a clue on how to take an order as they each came back to ask for a second then a third time what we ordered! Down to drinks, a simple beer order was difficult. It didn't have what we wanted so it replaced with another beer. BUT instead of bringing it to the whole table, it was for one person. And we had to request it multiple time that we wanted it more than one person.

All this mess was oversaw by the european manager who for some reason didn't lend assistance to his staff and just let them mess our orders.

It is a good thing that the food was decent but the ambiance totally wrecked our mood.

This is not fine dining at all. Fine dining is more than food its about the experience.
    Happy endings

Last night we went to Light and Salt on the Bund. A few weeks back we've been at their shanxi-lu sister...
The area is so pretty with the red brick-houses. A very nice lane that feels like you travelled to London.
However I didn't recognize the place as in the pictures. Their lighting was too bright, their chairs looked cheap and their flooring was awful. Now I got to say that to me the flooring of a restaurant makes a big difference for the atmosphere and their ugly uncomfortable tiles made me not feel like I'm in a gourmet-restaurant.
Now that's all I have to complain though because the food was throughout amazing!
We shared scallops and snales and they tasted really good.
As a main we shared lamb and spare ribs. Their barbecue sauce is heaven!
Now for the dessert I was craving for their chocolate fondant and the waitress told us they're out of that. What a bummer! I pictured myself right in that moment writing a bad review for them cause of the lack of chocolate fondant..
In the end the waitress brought us a dessert plate including the chocolate fondant with a candle and a "happy birthday" written on the plate. It was my birthday and one of the best surprises of the day.
Thank you Light and Salt for the happy ending ;)

One of those places that's been on my list of places to try for so long, but I finally managed to visit recently to celebrate an anniversary.

The pricing is extremely simple, it's just 295 RMB for 2 courses or 350 RMB for 3 courses. Everything was done well, our soup was full of flavour, scallops were beautifully presented. The amount of food isn't huge, but more than enough for me and certainly worth the money given the prestigious location. I paid about 3 times the amount for dinner next door at 8 1/2 Otto e Mezzo Bambana and it certainly wasn't 3 times better!

They have a terrace with tables and nice views for those who like dining al fresco although we sat inside on this occasion.

Service was excellent, not always the case at these high end Bund establishments, so overall, this was a very pleasant experience. And at around just 700 RMB for two of us, it's an experience I can repeat as often as I like and won't need to wait for another anniversary.
Amazing venue, menu, service and wines!

We held a Private Client Dinner for Austen Morris Associates (AMA) Light & Salt on March 18th and everything was excellent. Thank you to the staff who were superb, always on hand to offer us whatever we needed, there was never an empty glass, which was much needed as all the wine were perfectly paired making it very easy to drink! Our four course menu included canapés and cava in the L&S library was a great warmer to the foie gras mushroom bruschetta, Roasted Miso Cod and my personal recommendation: the Slow-Braised short-rib on Bone which was delicious. We will be back with friends and business events again soon.

The drinks at Light and Salt bar are seriously good! To be honest we did not even look at the drinks menu. The guy there just asked us what our favorite and least favorite drinks ingredients are and he took it from there. It was a real performance. And the result was seriously good. We had a couple of drinks each, since we enjoyed them so much. My second drink was even better than the first. The drinks were around 90RMB each, but they were so seriously good that they are worth it!! It's worth it to pay for such seriously good high quality.

Read and heard a lot about Light & Salt so decided to have dinner there with some friends. This restaurant is not worth the hype at all. The menu options were limited, with a choice of a 3 course meal at 395 rmb or 4 course meal at 425rmb. For the main meal course, most dishes would require a top up of at least 150 rmb, on top of whatever you are already paying for the set.

As most of us were not too hungry, we ordered ala carte dishes from the same menu, instead of choosing the course option. The prices were not stated clearly on the menu if we chose to order ala carte dishes. The waiter only gave us an estimated price. In the end, when the bill came, the price we paid for the ala carte dishes costed more than if we chose the course option. But the waiter did not bother to tell us that when he took our order.

The food was so-so but the portions were really small.

Service was bad. The waiter kept our plates without asking if we were done eating. The aircon was dripping water on one of my friends and we wanted to change to another table. But the waiters refused to give us another table because the rest of the tables were 'reserved' by other guests. When we left the place the other 'reserved' tables were still not filled.

The waiters' service were condescending, maybe because we didn't order the course meal option.

In essence, all of us with not return to this restaurant for the second time.

We booked Light & Salt for a hen do so there were 30 of us in total. From first contact with the restaurant Jane, the events organiser, was fantastic. She put together a menu for us and was flexible with the many requests we had. Right up to the night, Jane was on hand to answer any queries and was incredibly flexible with plans being changed at the last minute on the night!

We were greeted in the bar with glasses of wine and were made to feel very welcome all evening. We had the private dining room which was beautifully decorated. The dining room had bund views as well as access to the balcony which was ideal for our big group. The food was delicious and all courses were brought out together despite there being 30 of us!

The venue was perfect for a special occasion and I will definitely be going back again!

We had a lovely Easter brunch/birthday/goodbye party for thirteen of us at LIght and Salt. It was a great value since most brunches are so overpriced, you wind up eating far too much to get your money's worth! We decided to go for quality over quantity - but we had plenty. LIght and Salt is a beautifully appointed intimate space with a cosmopolitan view. It's a great place to take a visitor to Shanghai as we did. Brunch was delectable with a delicious array of sashimi, lobster, clams, a perfect Caesar salad amid several other salads and tidbits. We chose a main course of lobster eggs benedict (sauce and lobster great, bread a bit too hard to cut), but we also had choices of Wagyu beef, cod and some brioche and eggs. The dessert bar was almost too pretty to eat. We loved the lollicakes designed as Easter eggs. Festive champagne cocktails and rich coffees pepped us up! Perhaps best was the stellar service provided by Rick Starr and staff. We lingered and they gently transferred us to the bar area with the greatest kindness. We represented a wide range of Shanghai expats and we all agreed that we'd love to come back!

I'm not a fan of Bund area, which I find overrated and overpriced, but I had to take some guests out for dinner and tried this restaurant which according to the descriptions and reviews tries to add something different to what you can usually expect in other venues in the area. Overall the experience was good and I would be happy to go back with my friends for some special occasion.

The venue: nice, relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere. You can have a look at the pictures and webpage to get and idea. Not pretentious at all which makes me feel more comfortable.

The food: original selection of dishes for the menu, all that we tried (tuna tataki, russian soup, miso cod, scallops, beef tartare...) was nicely prepared and taste was really good. They also try to deliver sth extra with the visuals, it helps create some sort of artistic atmosphere together with the decoration.

The service: very attentive, not overwhelming. They made a mistake and took a little too long to serve the third course. In other places I wouldn't even expect to get an apology but this time we were offered free desserts to make up for it. Couldn't expect more.

The price: 350 RMB for a 3 course dinner, quite straightforward. You pay a little extra for desserts and a few special choices of mains. The down side is the wine list, prices starting from 400 RMB so we went for beer instead. I guess it's the standard in the Bund area. Overall value for money is just 3/5, but I've tried several places in that area with higher prices and quite poorer performance.
    It's okay.

    Overall... a big meh-it's okay.

After all the glowing reviews, decided to haul ass over to Rockbund and see what all the fuss is about.

Nice decor. Lovely plating. But at the end of the day, nothing mind blowing.

Sea urchin. Good. Scallops. Good. Beef Tartar. Good. Also, Miso Cod. Well, it's actually Chilean Seabass. And it tastes the same as all the other Miso Cod's I've had. So don't believe the hype!

    Rainbow cake. TERRIBLE.
I don't know what's going on with that thing but it consisted of crazy multi-coloured layers (green tea sponge, chocolate, peanut butter, coconut goop, strawberry something or rather) combined into a block of disgusting sticky strangeness.
It's saying something when it's the only dessert ordered for a table of five... and it was still sitting mostly on the plate at the end.

    Seasoning and Service spot on.

A table for two was booked at Light and Salt located at Rock Bund, from the moment of entering the building, to the arrival in the restaurant; I could not have been more impressed with the service, which was unobtrusive, and the waiters were excellent.

The menu, which was interesting the dishes chosen were outstanding in presentation, portion size, combination and taste.

    The menu

    Seared Scallops
    Foie Gras

    Tenderloin with bone marrow
    Roasted Miso Codfish

    Chocolate Fondant
    Lychee Soufflé

We chose the selected matching wines to accompany the meal, and again spot on, some actual professional thought went into the whole ensemble, the only let down personally was the bread selection, as it was slightly stale, which one could tell from the smell, otherwise no faults whatsoever, well perhaps the size of the table, a little too narrow, and the height of the banquette ratio to the chair, with the chair being hard and uncomfortable.

Following dinner we spent some time in the bar, good selection of cocktails and malt whisky, at reasonable prices.

All in all, an affordable night out, and certainly outshines many of Shanghai's supposed high-end restaurants on offer, and not just during Restaurant Week either. Would highly recommend, and return.
