I’ve never been a big fan of Dagu Lu (I think it was a writer for this very website a few years back that referred to it as a “bastion of mediocrity” and that’s been my go to description ever since). However, with an office nearby, I find myself dining here more often than I’d like. I begrudgingly ventured out to Dagu Lu for a quick bite to eat after work one night (originally looking for Patachon but apparently it closed a few months back?) and found myself at La Bota, on the stretch nearby Nolita and Nova.

My colleague and I sat down not expecting much, but ended up being pleasantly surprised by everything! First, the staff. We were greeted by a genuinely friendly waitress (European I believe) who was attentive the whole night and had some nice recommendations for food. Second, the prices – a couple glasses of good wine on the menu for <40RMB and prices by the bottle not so bad either. The owner mentioned that he used to import Spanish wines so perhaps that’s the reason. Third, the food – everything was delicious! On my first visit there we tried a pinxtos with steak/brie (?) cheese, croquetas, shrimp spring rolls (each shrimp is individually wrapped for a nice twist on the dish) and chorizo.

I was so surprised by the good experience I had at a restaurant on Dagu Lu, that I contacted the owners to see about having a group reservation there for my birthday. The owners, David and Jared, were really helpful in setting everything up and on the night of handled the 25-30 of us well. They were able to accommodate us on half of the first floor while taking care of the other guests who came in for the night. If you have a larger party, there is a terrace that can be used as well as a nice area upstairs.

All in all, a big fan of the newly opened La Bota and happy to make this place a regular after work spot.
