Honestly.. I am quite tired to read comments about restaurants . recently it starts to be annoying especially for Italian restaurants .. and yes.. I am Italian.. but this time I decided to write something.. and the reason why is the previous comment that Diego did it here. Dear Diego.. do you have any idea about what pizza means ? may be better to know what are you talking about ? Pizza could be thick or thin. .crusty or soft depends if talk about Roman pizza.. Napoletana pizza or Genoa ones ( they have a pesto pizza just in case you did not notice that)..ones.. btw Sicily has its pizza as well.. even in Naples pizza could have different thickness from 0,3 to 0,5 cm . so please could we try to do not generalize and .. when anyone write a comment could we write… I think that.. or my personal opinion..
So nothing personal.. enjoy a pizza thin and soft if you like it, but do not write that a restaurant specialized in pizza is bad coz you like it in a different way..

Gotta give up some props for Gemma. It's next door to my office but I'd steered clear for some time because it just screamed "overpriced" to me. Anyway decided to do lunch there last week. They have an RMB88 deal for 2.5 courses (the .5 being a cup of tiramisu at the end). I got the gnocci as the main. It came out and was just not good. No flavor. I complained and after a little bit of the manager giving me a once over to see if I was aesthetically qualified to comment on the quality of their food, they let me switch to a new main. I chose some sort of salad which was excellent. All was right in the world. Even the tiramisu was pretty good. Nice to sit on the open porch thing in the afternoon, even though Donghu lu traffic can get pretty deafening. One guy stops to drop off his tai-tai wife and then the whole street erupts in loud obnoxious honking. Anyway props to Gemma for doing the right thing.

The buy-one-get-one-free pizza deal on Monday at Gemma is stellar! Neapolitan style dough in the pizzas. Delicious and wonderful. Bravi bravi Gemma. Decor and ambiance is great for a date. I will be back again.

I've been twice now (the upstairs fine dining room) and I will be back again with more friends and business contacts. Go for the fixed menu. You leave completely full and every item is tasty. The mashed potatoes and fish (sounds weird) is a standout. I wish they'd pile more of that on. With the fixed menu you get to choose your main. Both times I have chosen the same thing: the pork belly ragu pasta (not sure of the exact name). It's just damn good comfort food.
The same girl waited on my party both times and she's cheerful as opposed to the jaded servers we often see in places.
The fixed menu is obviously carefully selected. I say that because it's not the same stuff you routinely see on Italian food menus and it's perfectly consistent. It taste exactly the same each time. So a lot of thought and planning was obviously put into the menu.
The pasta is handmade and that's cool. You can check it out as they display the room with a large glass window.
Overall, a great place to go without breaking the bank. I'm a big fan of consistency and they have that down.

I thought the pizza at Gemma is ok. Not bad. Certainly much better than liquid laundry next door. And with such high prices of its neighbor, the Gemma pizza prices are lower.
Something about the design is similar to its neighbor. This kind of rugged look seems to be popping up all over the place these days.

For a restaurant that specializes in pizza, the pizza is rather bad. The crust is too thick and a bit too crunchy. The toppings on the pizza are not so tasty too. The lunch deal of 80RMB comes with a "personal pizza", which actually means a pizza-mini, and almost as small as the iPod mini. The 88RMB deal is not good, and it includes a salad which is mostly just lettuce leaves.
I felt that the restaurant has a good vibe to it, though. Nicely appointed.
