Great location in Xintiandi close to Line 10 subway stop. Bagel sandwiches, a salad and Strictly Cookies cookies available. Service is top-notch: friendly and accommodating. Lunch special is a good value. Shop is a bit small, hope they are able to expand.
    A+ but sooooo addicting

I think most westerners agree that Chinese breakfast is just baffling.

So, in the mornings I go to Spread the Bagel on my way to work, as it is not only excellent but conveniently located near 3 subway lines [1/10/12].

The bagels are legit. Unless you're some NYC snob, you'll agree that the bagels meet the standard. Also, the bagel sandwiches are delicious and come in a nice variety of choices: Bacon, egg, and cheddar to roasted chicken.

Yes, they do have bagels and lox.

Also several varieties of cream cheese, nutella, and jam.

Gotta be quick because the Everything bagel typically sells out early.

They just added an Onion bagel to the line-up which I really hope they keep.

The girls that work there have great English, super friendly, and will remember you after 2 visits.

Also, you can get an Americano for 22rmb, or opt to try out YiDianDian next door. It's a Taiwanese milk tea chain that I've never seen without a big line. The location next to Spread the Bagel is a great one. Oolong Macchiato, hot, with 50% sugar is the way to go for the newbies.

I gave this place 5 stars, because it is everything it is supposed to be.

You don't have to be a 3 Michelin star restaurant to get a 5/5... this place is a bagel shop with great bagels, cream cheese, bagel sandwiches, coffees, and more.

Good variety, but keep it simple. I love the concept of keeping the offering small, and doing a few things really well.

Bagel sandwiches are where its at. But actually I get an everything bagel and plain spread 4-5 times a week because I'm cheap [22rmb], and always running late.

Not much inside seating, but always staffed acceptably and the people who work there have been friendly and professional, with excellent English.

For spreads they offer plain, scallion, jalapeno, jam, honey, nutella. Can't really go wrong. The jalapeno cream cheese is surprising good.

Yi DianDian, the Taiwanese milk tea chain is next door and always has a line at least 10 deep. Large Oolong Macchiato, hot, with 50% sugar level makes a perfect companion to a warm bagel with spread!

Boom Boom Bagels has a better interior, and maybe a more fortuitous location, but in my opinion STB wins out in about every other aspect of comparison.

    Nailed it.

Echoing other reviews, Spread the Bagel matches the hype of delicious bagels that live up to the New York standard. Definitely not the cheapest option for breakfast or lunch, but they're reasonable, and we expect to pay western prices for western food. They offer everything from a simple bagel with cream cheese (22RMB) to more elaborate sandwiches that hover in the neighborhood of 50-60RMB. They also have bottled cold brew coffee, which is fantastic, for 40RMB. The bagels seem to be automatically toasted, so if that's not your jam (untoasted everything with cream cheese for the win), make sure to request otherwise. The place is quite small, but there is a small bar by the window where you can sit down and relax. Most people are grabbing food on the go, so even when it's busy, it's a safe bet that you can find a seat if you'd like to watch life go by on Nanchang Lu. I can definitely say that after 6 months without a New York bagel, this place is exactly what I needed.

These guys are doing real deal bagels in Shanghai. I grew up on the upper west side of Manhattan, living on H&H bagels, and after they closed, Absolute bagels. Is Spread as good? Not quite, but that is a seriously high bar. Good enough to get close? Yes. The team running the shop on Nanchang is super pleasant and friendly. I'm not into the sandwiches myself, just straight up bagels and cream cheese, but at RMB 22 (US$3) the price is as fair as you could imagine. My ONLY complaint is that they frequently don't have cinnamon-raisin bagels for a reason I still can't fathom. Highly recommended for bagel lovers.

    This is the real deal.

This is a place in Shanghai where one can get acceptable bagels. These aren't acceptable bagels by Shanghai standards, they are good by an NYC standard. Are they as good as Ess-a-bagel or your favorite place your dad and uncle went to on Saturday morning to get bagels and lox? No. But they are crispy on the outside and toothsome on inside, with ummami undertones the way a good bagel should be.

I get a plane bagel with either cream cheese, or i get a plane bagel with lox, onion, tomato and capers. That's it. Both of which Spread The Bagel does very well. So well they make me home sick and content all at the same time.

I can't advise one who puts avocado or fried egg, or ham on a bagel. You and I are seeking different things in our bagels. But know that Spread the Bagel does these things, and my friends who enjoy such things insist that they are "bomb", "fire", or "hella good" depending on what part of the world they hail from. I won't be having any of it, but it's there if you want.

    Service, fast, accurate, and friendly.

Environment. It's small. A bar and three stools on a counter that faces the street. That's it. It's great. They've got wifi if you want to linger but I tend to inhale my bagel and I am out of there in 4 minutes flat.

Pricing. It's expensive. But they are dealing in perishables like smoked salmon and cheam cheese so don't expect it to be cheap. Lox and cream cheese will run you 55 rmb.

They have espresso drinks for 20-30 rmb and they have cold brewed bottled coffee for 40 rmb. Yeah it's expensive for a cold brewed coffee but for a once a week treat whatever right. We spend 50 rmb for crappy shelf vodka and cranberry drink without even batting an eye, so whatever, don't complain.
