Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurant with three branches around town. The menu is surprisingly extensive, featuring everything from empanadas and fajitas to tacos and churros. They do a pretty decent margarita, too.

There is nothing more that a southern Californian misses than their palms speckled white from the flour of a warm burrito; crispy in gold brown spots ready to be peeled and taken on the tongue like the body of christ. The flakes, the cheese, the carne, the potatoes— the first time you said “californian burrito” instead of “bean & cheese.”

Pistolera has been my fix in China. Last night it had me craving more for the wrong reasons. Their burrito was the size of a microwaveable chimichanga. Carne was chewy like chiclet. It was also wet, which is fine if you are making a wet burrito, but commit to something instead of this spongy purgatory borderline wrap— the salsa pooling on the bottom, the careless jalapeños, the two leaves of spinach lost in their own ambiguity.

My margarita, something that Pistolera has always done well, was worth only a few sips. The people next to us sent back two drinks.

They still at least do their nachos right, not skimping on the cheese and beating down all of the other ridiculous 100rmb nachos and are well worth it to share. (Unless of course you like the mess of chips, spaghetti meat, and morsel of cheese that other popular places offer).

For so long Pistolera has been my place. Their food was as close as it could get to being at home. Ages ago when they were only out in Pudong I had met the owner who was a real class act, and I don’t pretend to know the inner workings of anything, but I think he left? It would make sense because it seems like daddy is away and the kids are playing in the kitchen and behind the bar.
Best Mexican I've had so far in Shanghai

A little bit pricey, but the burritos are pretty decent- spend the extra moolah for the green sauce to put onto your burrito....it's amaaaaazing!!! The barbacoa tacos are really juicy and tasty too. Our server in particular was a little slow, slightly judged us for wanting to order as much as we did (my husband was starving and worked all day- each plate of tacos only had two tacos each) and messed up our bill a little bit. No worries though. All in all we enjoyed the food and Melody, the hostess. She's so sweet. They apparently have live music on the rooftop on certain days- wish I could remember which. May be fun to go back and check it out.
    Muchas Gracias

This is a very cool place and food is amazing. Solid authentic mexican food. No tex-mex here :-) Try the 40 cm massive buritto, jalapeño poppers, seafood ceviche, cheese dip, guacamole, …. I could go on. Not to forget the various cocktail on the menus and good selection of tequilas! They have a wonderful roof top terrace. Will be great this summer.
    Pretty good nachos!

Just moved to Shanghai and this is one of the first good restaurants i have visited. The food was beyond my expectation. The nachos and tacos were really good, i wouldn't recommend the chocoflan as a desert but that just might be my taste.

The service was decent, the waiters would not follow up with us to ask if we wanted more dishes but that could be looked past, they were polite to assist.

Overall with its great ambience, good food & drinks, great location and value for money, I would definitely recommend this place.

    Taste of good ol Mehico

A bunch of us went to Pistolera on Friday night around 8pm. The location is pretty good, bang on Hengshan lu so cant be missed if you're looking for it.

The staff is quick at the door and getting a place was easy for the 4 of us.
The waitstaff smiles a lot which is much needed in Shanghai.
Ordered a couple of pitchers of margaritas and we settled in for a good time. Complimentary nachos were quick to appear as were the drinks (albeit in smallish pitchers).

We ordered a big plate of nachos with all the goods, the shrimp jalapenos (hot!!) and my friends went for the enchiladas, which they thoroughly enjoyed, judging from the noises from their end of the table.

I intended to order a burrito as well, but the nachos and poppers filled me up good. The various sauces on offer are pretty awesome and the place itself has a good vibe. Add to that a friendly waitstaff, good food and reasonable prices, and you have a good alternative for the times you crave Mexican but dont wanna go to Cantina Agave for the 78th time!
