POP is the new concept to replace New Heights. It's an American-inspired brasserie that totally looks the part — red button leather booths, tray ceilings, tones of copper and tan. The menu is mostly approachable comfort cuisine like braised short ribs, duck leg confit, steaks, and classics like oysters Rockefeller. As always the riverside views are impressive.

After a good dinner on the Bund my friends and I decided to try POP. I had a fairly bad experience shortly after they opened for brunch ,but decided to give it a second try. Well…. Here is my friends a nd my experience.
After entering the restaurant and walking through an empty restaurant we took a seat on the terrace.
Here just a few points me and my friends discussed after we left this unpleasant place, which we really hope the management of POP will read.
    1) The seats are too low. You have a primary BUND View ! Why are you offering low seats ? It takes half the view .When you sit down you are directlly facing the barrier.
Also why do you cover up the view(you pay a LOT of rent for ) with a fake wall behind the DJ stand ?? As a guest you walk towards the terrace and all you see is this hiddeaus fake wall.
    2) Service was among THE WORST I have encontered in my 7 years in Shanghai. The staff was not only unfriendly, slow, not interested , but also absolutelly bored with what they were / or better put were NOT doing. Not the best impression especially on a Saturday night .
    3) 3) If you have a party of 4 you should serve the drinks together and not 2 people first and then let the other 2 people wait for 10 min without explanation .... Thats is just not nice.
    4) Cocktails average taste average price.

A foreign DJ does not guarentee you to be hip especially in a place like Shanghai.
We were honestlly surprised we did not see the usual chinese restaurant style AYI rolling through the restaurant with the trash bags.
Sad to see a great venue like this ,wasted on a concept that is clearly not working at all.
It shows, that even with a good hard wear ,if your soft wear sucks you are doomed to fail.

Dining here for the second time, one chose the brunch menu on a lazy afternoon. The location cannot be beaten for the view of the bund.

Appetizers are good as are mains but I when I do return in the future, I shall opt for a spot of dinner as I find the dinner menu more extensive and interesting.

Reasonably priced cuisine for the bund area, however, some attention must be paid with the drinks service, 10 minutes is too long for a cappuccino!!

We reserved a Friday night table for 4 at Pop. Being an American expat I've never gone out of my way to find American food in China, so I went in with an open mind and flexible expectations. Also having been a frequent patron of former occupant New Heights, I was curious to see what had been done to transform the space into an "American Brasserie."

First impressions weren't great. The main dining area, now crammed with tiny 4-top tables, was completely deserted; most of the tables outside were occupied. We were seated at a indoor table, which we quickly discovered was nearly incapable of containing all of our plates and glasses. When we asked to move to a larger table near a window, we were told the table was reserved for the restaurant's owners. We watched that table - and the rest of the dining room for the next 1.5 hours - and we were the only people seated inside (at all!) during that time.

Steaks occupy a large portion of Pop's menu, so two were ordered for our table - one a "Wagyu" filet, the other a New York Strip. A roast chicken plate and several appetizers were also ordered, along with several bottles of wine. The food, with the exception of a smoked salmon plate (pretty hard to screw that up), ranged from boring to awful. The steaks were tough and chewy. The appetizers and chicken uninspired. (Having just returned from a trip in Japan, we're pretty certain Pop's "Wagyu" is not the real deal).

With a disappointing dinner finished, we asked about being moved to the bar area for an after-dinner drink. At this point we were told that an outdoor table would require an additional 2,000RMB spend ... on top of the 2,500 we'd already spent on dinner and wine. When going over to view bar tables I was brushed aside by a bar manager who told the waitress with me (in Chinese) that the choice interior table could not be ours. He acted as if I wasn't standing right in front of them.

At this point we finally got the message and decided to leave.

Before leaving we politely expressed our dissatisfaction to our waitress and a passing manager, but were ignored. No apologies, no offer to remedy our complaints. Nothing.

We'd wondered on arrival why the place was empty. After this experience we have the painful answer. Pop is a sad waste of a beautiful space, but we should expect it will soon go "pop" and be replaced by something superior.
