Beautiful lounge with great food at good prices. This one is by the same team as popular Rockbund venue The Nest, but located far west of there on mellow and historic Yuyuan Lu. One of the main themes here is the sea, so fresh seafood is all over the menu. Go for the tuna jaw and the octopus. The other theme is canning (hence the name), so they can and sell a lot of items like duck liver and steamed clams. All the draft beers are craft-ish and they're all 48rmb a pint. Signature cocktails range from 58-98rmb. The whiskey selection is all bourbon, rye, and Canadian, and might be the biggest in China. Music is good rock and roll, new and old. Definitely a good spot for a meeting, a date, or the start to a night out. Casual but nice, and memorable.

I suspect earlier reviews are based on an undeclared "soft opening" period because The Cannery has not disappointed me at all.

Being a regular at The Nest I had high hopes for TC and it is amazing! The food, presentation, staff and the cocktails... All so good and reliably delectable.

Give it a go - Changning needed a boost of flavour and style.

Underwhelmed and unimpressed. Unfortunately, The Cannery does not live up to its sister, The Nest. The design and atmosphere were great - informal, relaxed and high energy (although they did hike the music up a bit later on to a point where it was too loud to make yourself heard around a table). The cocktails were also fantastic. However, the food was disappointing. Heavy on carbs and minuscule portions (the grilled asparagus was a 48rmb side consisted of 4, yes 4, very thin spears of asparagus - when we complained they did bring us another portion free of charge). Service was slow, some drinks took 20 minutes, some didn't arrive at all. Food which we ordered at the same time arrived over the space of 1 hour and we had to ask 3 times before our champagne was topped up (this was given to us by the manager as he said he recognised us from The Nest. More likely because we had complained). Overall, unless I was in the area and in need of a cocktail, I won't be going back.
Roller coaster between good and horrible dishes

Dine here with 4 friends last Saturday. The place recalls very much Nest. Where Nest is the cool brother and Cannery the ugly one. We had several gin tonics, all on point.

A very good note is the politeness and attentiveness of the stuff, especially the manager. However, we ordered two portion of tuna jaw and only when they served the first one they told us the didn't have the second one..They should have communicate this when we placed the order NOT when you serve the first portion!!!

The bad note was the roller coaster between good dishes (but not impressive) and horrible one. Over two years in Shanghai, I sent back only once a dish but this time had to send back two, debating if to send back also a third one. The kingfish tartare, was so salty that was absolutely impossible to eat even for someone that loves salt 1/10.

Ahi poke was quite average and also very salty 4/10 (not even to compare to Little catch). They were out of mussels so we had the clams 7/10. Grilled Octopus, good but not as good as Commune Social, 7/10. Tuna jaw was very good (the only that made it to the table), 8/10. Rib-eye very good, 9/10. Brownie with ice cream, average 5/10. Espresso was really bad 2/10.

Bill was actually ok considering we had couple of drinks each, but they also took out two dishes from the bill.

Overall disappointing and unfortunately wouldn't recommend it.
