Editor's Description

Jade on 36 is the flagship restaurant and bar of the luxe Shangri-La Hotel group's flagship hotel. Both, designed by NY bigshot Adam Tihany, are modern China, two steps removed -- the bar is enclosed on one side by an abstract hot pink and jade-colored jewel box and as you walk along the Italianate marble floors (it's a five-star hotel, after all) to the restaurant, you pass through a blue sculpture that evokes a perforated rice bowl. Neither bar nor restaurant are for small wallets, but for a more intimate (and often better) view of the Bund than the too-high Jin Mao, the bar is a prime choice. From 2005 to late 2008, the restaurant was internationally recognized for the playful, high concept food of Chef Paul Pairet. When Pairet left in 2008, Frenchman Fabrice Giraud took over and revamped the menu into something more classically French, albeit with contemporary flourishes. Great for special occasions and business, in particular. The bar should be a requisite stop for visitors.

First went to Jade on 36 at the end of '08 ... unplanned, we weren't even sure what to expect. We came away impressed, their choices of set menus were different, the food outstanding and explanation of each dish by the staff was insightful. While some may have found the explanations intrusive, it was a journey of discovery, we found it delightful ... it was different. As global travelers to capital cities in the high tech business, we have been to great restaurants ... this easily made our top 5. We went back a few nights ago for a special occasion ... but it's changed, gone is the set menu and its variety, it's now just another high end restaurant. The food was well presented but so-so ... at best ... the lobster died in vain for my lobster bisque. No reason to go back, there are plenty of other great places to eat in Shanghai.

A repeat customer and have always ordered the same thing...."Medium Jade" which is sometimes fantastic and sometimes not-so. I have been there several times and the standards seem to change on the night. I was also told that their menu is changing soon and the new chef has been "invited" so that may explain the difference in food lately. I am usually happy with the service but was extremely disappointed on my last visit due to the fact that a particular bottle of wine was ordered, was discovered to be out of stock and was then replaced with a similar wine (determined by the host). I was surprised to see on the check that I was charged for the more expensive replacement (it really should have been comp'd at an establishment like this). I raised no fuss but questioned whether or not I will return. There are many more fine dining experiences in Shanghai.

Was last at Jade a couple weeks ago with some business assciate from US who are foodie and wine lover, they truly enjoy their experience at Jade, they still are talking about it even till today in all our correspondance. Would say the food presentation and service are world class and really did put Shanghai onto the map for gourmet quest. I do travel extensively for work and dine in many top class restaurant around the world, but this is closer to home and does brings dining experience to the next level and make Asia proud. Bravo to Jade! I will be back again if time permits and that would be favorite restaurant now.

After hearing much hype about the avant-garde presentation and tastes in Jade on 36's menu, I felt compelled to try it out for myself. I don't know what it was like in 2008 but having gone 2 nights ago I must say this was by far the worst meal I have had in many many years. The presentation was interesting but the taste was absolutely horrible. I am one who likes all types of food and am not a picky eater, so to make my face consistently cringe at the taste of all 6 courses (yes all 6 of them) is rather an accomplishment. The textures and flavors were repulsive and even the waiters admitted to having numerous clients who found the food to be "a stretch to their palates". Yeah, that's one way of putting it.Save your money because the 3600+ RMB we paid for 3 people is money we will never get back.

I came here for an anniversary and I have to say, the food did not disappoint. Although a bit wary of fusion food, this was done innovatively and focused on the flavors and presentation. Each dish that came out was very impressive and delicious, although it does come with a price.

To sum up without getting too wordy, this was a fantastic dining experience in Shanghai. Yes, it is pricey but with it comes innovative plates not found anywhere else in the city. Jade on 36 covered every aspect of a wonderful evening out- Fine service and excellent food with a beautiful backdrop of a Shanghai you don't normally get to see. Highly recommended.
