Perhaps the classiest Indian eatery in Shanghai, Bukhara is noted for its royal decor and authentic Northern Indian cooking. Ingredients and waitstaff imported from India. It can be a bit pricey. Brunch on the weekends is a deal.

Although I have yet to try Vedas, Bukhara was a fantastic Northern Indian cuisine. The mangers and staff were very friendly and the open style window kitchen was inviting. The food was fantastic and the wine recommended was very good.

As mentioned before the price is a bit steep, however when you are looking for a nice Indian meal, this would be the place to go. I wish they had a location closer to the downtown area!

Went to Bukhara after failing to find the Hongmei branch of Punjabi. THANK GOD we went! It was AMAZING! Entering the main dining floor, which was filled to the gills, you could tell the food and service was amazing. The chefs are visible to the guests from the big open cooking area that is only divided by glass. BTW, they provide a free bottle of water for each table. Take advantage because the drinks are PRICEY!

The restaurant itself is attached to the Hongqiao Pearl Market (aka fake market) along the Hongmei Food/Entertainment street. Didn't think that such a great restaurant would be found right there!

The menu was extensive but well laid out so you don't have to question what's what. The naan selection was excellent and the section it even provides explanations of different types of naan-type breads (I've never seen those selections before so sorry if I don't do it justice!)

Our waiter was excellent--he joked about how spicy we should attempt to go with our curries and was quick to put in our order. The other waiters were great, too. They were always aware of your needs but not hovering like at a Chinese or even European restaurant. From what I noticed, all the waiters, the chefs, and even one of the hostesses was Indian. There were only 3 Chinese people working there, 2 of whom were busing tables.

In fact, most of the patrons at Bukhara were Indian, which we took as a great sign.

We ordered samosas (the flavor was rich and amazing--the best my partner-in-dining, who has been to India, says he had ever had), chicken vindaloo (again, EXCELLENT flavor and spiced just right...IF you get the normal spiciness), and the lasooni palak paneer (the spinach was perfect). The plain naan was perfect and the rice was nothing extraordinary but still delicious.

Although the portions seem small, we split all that and were STUFFED! I also got the mango lassi which was the best I've had...definitely not made with crappy syrup.

While the prices were high, the food is worth it. The restaurant was clean, friendly and definitely going to become a staple on my go-to restaurant list.

I Heard of Bukara brunch from my friends and was planning to visit it from sometime. luckily one of my colleague offered me a treat at Bukara. It was bit far from my home. I stay in pudong dongchang lu. The service staff was very good. there were lot of items i did not taste most of them . I liked the meat varieties like keema , and mutton rolls very much. it is very difficult to get goat meat in china. the juices were good too. The roti's and nans served were good. There were only 2 desserts i wish there were more desserts. Overall i am very satisfied with a heavy brunch.

I am not a big fan of indian food, but this time, under the strong recommandation, I went to this Indian "fine dinning" located on hongmei road.

The decoration is really good.Typical north indian design with special style. It brings great dinning atmosphere. The small deco near the windows and the little funitures remind you that you were in India.

The kitchen is really impressive, with copper all cover the wall and where you can see your food is cooking. The bread is extremely good. My friend told me that this restaurant is famous for big bread in India. But somehow I find out in Shanghai, the bread is not "that" big, but of course very deliious. The other foods on the menu are also very tasty, just for presentation wise, most curry dish look the same. So even we have ordered 3 or 4 different dishes, it looks like we were eating the same food.

It is a good food experince, but the bill is a bit suprising, well, worth for a try anyway.

Indian Brunch

The regal Bukhara is one of the two kings of Good Indian Cooking in Shanghai, and perennially popular with the Indian community. During the week, dining here can get pricey, but the brunch on the weekend -- an unlimited buffet of nearly 40 north Indian dishes, including unlimited Budweiser and soft drinks, plus several vegetarian items -- is a deal at 158rmb. Family-friendly, too. Kids under 5 are free, and kids between 5-12 eat for 88rmb. Popular dishes on the buffett include chicken biryani, butter chicken, sikh kebabs, all manner of tandoori, and various Indian breads. Reservations are a good idea. 11am-3pm.
