I took my wife out to Hugo to celebrate her birthday and although the food was fine, the place was off a little and like the typical Western restaurant in Shanghai- a lot of hype and lacking in substance. Pro's of Hugo: 1) Service was good compared to China standards. The waiters and host were all reasonable and tried their very best. 2) Food has potential. 3) The complimentary appetizers from chef was very good, along with the bread. Con's of Hugo: 1) The price performance of its food under performs. We spent almost 1800RMB and although the restaurant was interesting, it did not deserve a recommendation to friends. 2) The wine we ordered, a 2004 Penfolds Koonunga Hill Cabernet was too warm. It screamed that their wine cellar is maintained poorly, with little effort in trying to maintain proper temperature and humidity. 3) I had the 4 course set menu and the food was ok, but uneven. The beef carpaccio was too warm. It tasted as if the meat has been sitting out too long. 4) The rack of lamb was also mediocre. The meat had little flavor but brought out medium rare (good!) and salted a little heavily and the red wine reduction sauce was neutral with no flavor. The beans were too hard and undercooked. 5) My wife ordered the beef tenderloin and it was under-salted and cooked nearly well done. It tasted not so good. She didn't finish her food. I think the salted my lamb twice and forgot to salt my wife's steak. 6) Dining room design is lacking. Hugo tries to present it as a very polished, luxurious dining experience, but it fails. For instance, the lighting and the fixtures are tacky. It needs a centerpiece to chandelier at the prices it charges. In summary, Hugo was an overall disappointment, especially with the steep prices. It tries really hard to be a great restaurant, but it still has a way to go. The food is too inconsistent, the dining room experience felt tacky and designed poorly, and the wine served was so disappointing. Management still has a long way to go in getting the details done properly.
