Bali Laguna was one of the first restaurants of its kind in Shanghai. The menu here consists of your standard Indonesian fare like nasi goreng, satays, and aromatic curries. Over the years, the menu has gotten a bit tired. However, its location overlooking a pond in Jing'an Park still manages to put people in seats.

The location is quiet nice, but we ordered water to the wine, and finally we had to pay 260 Rmb just for the water ( 3 bottles, 1 liter). The food ( we took quiet a lot since we were with friends, so we tried plenty of it), was not very good. it was ok, but also here 60 rmb for 4 small sticks of meat full of fat ( you pay for those 20 cent on the street) is not a fair price. 130 for 3 pieces of prawns...but the most important aspect is probably that is was not worth the money because it was just not good.
maybe for drinks the place could be nice, saw some milkshakes for around 50 RMB.

Family's in town so I was looking for their first restaurant to have dinner. Couple of friends suggested Bali Laguna for the decor mostly, other couple of friends said the food was OK. Well, it was indeed OK, not great at all, nothing like what you get in Indonesia for sure but for the price and decor, it was alright. Now, the service was horrible! I had booked asking to be on the terrace but they said it'd be too cold. We got there and they were not serving food outside, no big issue. We then waited 10 to 15 minutes to be seated in a semi-private room on the last floor, which was nice (even though you couldn't enjoy the rest of the place) but there was nothing set-up. I had to ask them twice and they only started with the tablecloth as we were already checking the menu (that I had brought from downstairs). They brought in the glasses but left the wine bottle unopened on a chair next to our table. I got up myself to open it and serve ourselves... After ordering food, we had to wait even longer to get plates, silverware and napkins. I'll pass the details but my brother got his main dish way after we had all finished so he basically shared it as not hungry anymore. Finally, we just went straight down to the bar to pay so as not to waste anymore time for them to bring the bill up.
Overall, I'd say it's average, but the setting is beautiful on the lake. With a date, as you want to take your time, I guess it'd be ok, for drinks mostly. Wouldn't recommend it with group of friends or with family.
I'll look for other Indonesian restaurants.
