Lan Xin is one of three tiny homestyle Shanghainese restaurants that populate the eastern end of Jinxian Lu. Nearby Chun gets all the int'l accolades, but Lan Xin's honest hometown getting is just as good. There's no atmosphere to speak of, or at least none beyond flourescent lights and a six-table, boxy storefront. Bigger groups get the second floor bedroom-cum-dining room that completes with a bed/couch, TV, and dresser full of clothes. Fancy cars park outside and their owners queue with everyone else. Classics on the menu include the
hongshao rou with green peppers,
jiang ya, a braised duck leg covered in thick, sweetened soy sauce,
you bao xia, tiny river shrimp flash-fried with rice wine and ginger, and
yendu xian, a mild signature soup of bamboo shoots, knots of pressed tofu, salted ham, and fresh pork. No reservations.
