Owned by a Hong Kong film star, Volar originally penned as an exclusive member's only club but has recently made moves to appeal to a younger Hip Hop / Dance crowd on the weekends. As one of the nicest designed bars in Shanghai, and as a provider of some of the finer quality of cocktails, Volar is popular with the richer nightlife set.
Could be a cool place, but totally agree with what another person wrote about the hip-hop MC. A completely talentless idiot not fitting with the style of this place. Shouting "c'mon...yeah!" and a load of other 80's hip-hop cliches is not MC-ing.
Interior design that will ithc your hand with the cam & blitz mesmerizing all color of faces.
bubbles popping in each corner swaying drunkheads to the comnfort of their beds'
staff improvement in need to be increase.
blow ur mind & benjamin here
finally it goes public
it does right? otherwise they should just take it back where it came from.
no offense to the designer,
love his architecture designs tho
This club is poorly managed. Does not live up to it's name in Hong Kong. Before I even stepped foot into the club, I was pretty discouraged at the loud-mouthed, rude, major-attitude, short-haired hostess at the front door. While inside the club, The hiphop DJ was terrible. The music was choppy, very random, and did not flow well with the crowd. To top it off, the dork MC that carries a backpack around the club kept on repeating the same few tag lines "awww..shiet, here we go...this is how we do.." every few minutes. Damn that was annoying. Lastly, what the hell is up with the photographer who keeps on flashing the camera in people's faces??
I feel sorry for the people who actually bought into the members's only scheme. This place is whack.
Volar had really good dance music. My only complaint was the waitstaff on the 2nd floor. I asked one of the waitresses if I could change my chair because it was really uncomfortable and all she said was " Sorry, no!" Talk about no customer service at all. I have to say that the waitstaff were very snutty or snobbish. Even more than the clients themselves. But the waitstaff on the first floor were very accommodating. We had some requests and they did it immediately with no hesitation at all. The total opposite from the waitstaff upstairs. Definitely worth it to give the waitstaff from the 1st floor a certain amount of tip. I was just wondering if they have different managers for the 1st floor and the 2nd floor. Why such a different attitude?
A very good and just review. At first you seemed quite disappointed, but I must say you summed it up PERFECTLY in the last three paragraphs, especially the comparison with the other clubs. :)
Last time I was at Volar was during the two week Grey Goose party (you'll find a post about it some weeks ago on my blog, lehnberg.net) and it was one of the better night life experiences on a weekday since I came to the city. Volar is a good indication that Shanghai's nightlife is growing in all directions, not only in the no. of tourist spots, or tacky pole dancing places. It's fun to see more spots where creative and trendy metropolitans can hang out while leaving the attitude at the door.
The exclusiveness of the place should however not be taken too seriously upon, but it is nevertheless appreciated that the club is keeping the relatively low profile it does, mostly attracting visitors by word of mouth.
