This restaurant dishes out no frills, homestyle Yunan dishes, some interesting dishes which may not be all that Chinese is the Cheese balls, which are a favourite to expats visting. Other favorites include it's wide selection of imported beers.

Out of all the times we've been there (more than 10), the previous time we suffered diarrhea which lasted all night. Called the restaurant the next day and they said they'd be happy to give us a free meal next time, but never tell us how (kinda disappointed since we really like the restaurant).

Other than that one time, the food had always been pretty consistent, the price is reasonable and the food is always served promptly. The servers are polite and the manager (or owner) always greets the guests. When you make a reservation they sent you a sms with the address, very thoughtful.

Each time I go back to Southern Barbarian I ask myself why I don't eat there more often. The food is excellent, and I'd give suggestions, but there are so many good things on that menu that I wouldn't know when to. And they have a beer selection that is impressive. Go.

My apologies about being given counterfeit money. That was obviously unintentional and I\'m sorry our staff didn\'t deal with it in a satisfactory manner. Please do ring the restaurant again and ask to speak to Feng Jianwen, and I\'ll make sure that you get your money reimbursed. Apologies again. It should not have happened and we\'ll do our best to make sure it doesn\'t happen again in future.

I am a Canadian expat working in Shanghai temporarily. I visited Southern Barbarian with a co-worker for the first time on July 27, 2008 from 7pm to 8pm. We read that their bbq chicken wings and chilli beef slice are excellent so we took a special trip to the restaurant. It's a disappointment for me.

I highly recommend against this restaurant not just because their food and environment were less-than-good, but also because they give out fake bills. They gave us a fake RMB 50 bill as our change. I didn’t realize it was fake until I tried to use it to pay for cab and later at the grocery store. Both the cab driver and cashier barely rubbed the bill once before returning it to me claiming that it’s fake. I called back the restaurant – although we had a sensible discussion, they aren’t going to take responsibility obviously (didn't even apologize) and they admit that they didn’t really check the bills that their customers pay them. At the time I don’t know how to tell real from fake but looking back, the fake bill is pretty obvious.

Regardless of whether this is intentional, bottom line is that I didn't enjoy the food and environment, and I suffered financially. Given the price of food there, RMB 50 is a large sum. All factors combined, I have no choice but to say - DO NOT GO.

One of the most popular Chinese joints for locals and foreigners alike, this Hunan-style restaurant is always packed despite a cafeteria-sized main dining area and at least a dozen "private" rooms. Food is high on flavor and will leave your eyes wate.. View listing »
