Editor's Description
Honest Italian food in a down-home environment. If you're looking for a few favorites at prices that won't break the bank, Pane e Vino is a great option, and you can put together a nice meal excluding wine for under 100rmb. Of note is the pizza, the crust of which is made from imported Italian flour, and the several creamy pastas on offer. Run by an Italian chef and his wife, Pane e Vino is one of the few Italian restaurants in town to merit a return visit.

After searching far and wide for a good (but affordable) Italian restaurant, last year our five-year quest ended when we found Pane e Vino on the old bar-street Maoming lu. Run by a wonderful couple (Antonio and his wife Echo), we almost forgot just how great Italian food can be when it's made with integrity and good ingredients. You will not be wowed by the decor, but the food and service grew on us like no other little restaurant in Shanghai has. Arguably the best Spag. Bol. in town, pizza's made with imported Italian flour, beautiful salads, all under a hundred RMB. If the occasion requires, they have some higher-priced dishes too (foie gras-topped tenderloin, truffle & scallop linguini). Wines are affordable, and service is warm and friendly (they remembered our names on our second visit). In short, ONLY come here if you are prepared to come back 2-3 times a week like we do. It's addictive.

I've had dinner at Pane E Vino there on Friday after reading good things about it here on this site. The place is excellent, and that kind of restaurant that I've missed in Shanghai for years. Nothing fancy, no international chain behind it, no franchise and it's not in a shopping mall. Pane e Vino is located on the (now) very quite Maoming Nan Lu (old memories) in between a bunch of other small restaurants and bars (Blue Frog, El Wajh ..). The location is perfect if you want to have some drinks at Face or Colors before dinner, or go out to e.g. Park 97 after dinner. The menu offers all the Italian classics, we've tried 3 different pizzas and they are just the way you'd expect them in an authentic Italian restaurant, with very good ingredients. At 80rmb a pizza this is probably the best price/value ration in town. Dinner for 3, including starters and a bottle of wine at 550rmb. Bargain. Make reservations, people where lining up to get table on a Friday evening, and the place is rather small.

My girlfriend and I went to Pane E Vino after reading a review where Pane E Vino was mentioned. I was surprised upon arrival and thought that the review that I had read was old and outdated.
Pane E Vino does offer a great welcome and good service. However, as we opened the menus one can only be badly surprised to see that the cheapest bottle of wine lies around RMB 200. Even the House Wine was not under RMB 200. The food was nothing spectacular (I can recommend quite a few other places where the pizzas are better), but I do agree that the atmosphere is very nice and cozy.
A place for a first date? - Could definitely work
A place for having a good value Italian meal? - Sorry, but I have to say no!

... very nice place, almost feels like eating at home. We all condsider this place as our favorite for pizza and pasta. It is on of the few italian restaurants you get a pasta with "creamy" sauce but not fat - just very fresh, intensif taste - perfect. We never had a single disappointing dish since a long time and we are often there (with high expectations towards western style restaurants)! Only point to improve: sometimes it needs a little long to get the fresh baked bread on the table.
cozy atmosphere, nice staff and the Italian chef and his wife care personally about the place.

I had high expectations for my pasta at Pane e Vino, so I must say I was disappointed when my tortellini Pane e Vino didn't manage to impress me more. The ham was too chewy and didn't blend well with the tortellini (which in fact was a bit dry). I also find the prices there a bit hefty. The pizza was good, all thin and very fresh but I don't know.. The best thing I ate there was a large piece of the chocolate truffle cake which came with ice cream. It was almost 50 kuai which I find too much, but it was divine! For that one I would come back, but not for the tortellini.
