Editor's Description

In order to enter the actual dining area you'll walk through a fun-house hall of mirrors. Don't let it disorient you - or risk falling into water on either side of the path. Once inside, you'll find an two immense floors of eating space with a second floor over-looking the garden. Dishes are traditional Chinese fair, prices are quite modern. Popular spot for weddings.

Ever since I came to Shanghai and became kitchen-less, I had been craving for spicy food, something extremely hot that could blow off the top of my head (like cartoon). My definition of ‘Spicy’ is the sensation you experience right after you chew down 35 cloves of uncooked garlic. ‘South Beauty’ cooks just the way I do, only better. One of my best favorite restaurants! I am sure they also have nice Cantonese dishes but we only had Sichuan dishes at the time. One of staffs gave us very helpful recommendation to our request for Super-Ultra-Crazy spicy dishes. Two of us had 7 dishes and all of 7 were wonderful. I especially liked Grilled king prawn cooked with massive amount of red peppers, Spicily marinated beef boiled with herb and spices, Mushroom shaped fried Chicken with hot chilly sauce on the side. The place was packed on the Friday we visited. Better to make reservation! We tried to have cocktails while waiting. We returned one and cancelled one. They don’t know how to make it and also don’t have all the necessary liquors to make it. Nice open kitchen. You can see modern Chinese kitchen with stainless Chinese style cooking stoves. Bad circulation. Many people including us ordered beef pot that created lots spicy smoke when the meat was thrown into the boiled water. The spiciness in the air was poking my eyes to bloodshot eyes. The bill came out cheaper than we expected. 353 RMB for 1 cold spicy vegetable salad, 1 cold not-so spicy chicken salad, 1 warm spicy vegetable salad, 1 spicy prawn (2 piece), 1 spicy chicken, 1 spicy beef, 2 small bowls of spicy noodle, 2 coke.
