Editor's Description
Known by many as "that blind restaurant," Black Cafe is the place where customers eat in the pitch black while being served by the sightless. The venue is shockingly clean. Although you won't ever know exactly what it is that you ate, it actually tastes pretty good. (Order before entering the Black room.)

The artist community at 696 Weihai and Shanxi Lu took a stand and refused to be torn down. Once opium storage facilities, this mass of buildings now houses more than 40 artist studios and an increasing number of galleries. It's not like Moganshan Lu though ... if you prowl through the rooms unannounced artists-at-work might get annoyed.

I was intrigued when my girl friend sent me a link to this recently opened restaurant, I went along booked and thought nothing more of it until the following Friday evening.
After depositing all your electronic ware in the lockers, then up the staircase to be greeted by ones waiter, then lead behind the dark curtain as if into a world of magic, when fear strikes you right in the pit of your stomach total darkness, and nothing liked I have experienced before, hardly any air to breathe whatsoever, (somewhat reminded me of the time when I got stuck in a tunnel as a child, which brought back awful memories)
I bolted, yes a wuss, only to be put at ease by my girlfriend and coaxed back by the restaurant manager, once seated I overcome the fear we had an experience not to forget, the waiter Jerry was really very good, explained where everything was placed, but really unnecessary as we used our hands and fed each other, even had a bottle of wine, served in plastic beakers.
The food was tasty, not the most tender of steaks, (perhaps this could have cut into stripes) for want of ease. The dessert of profiteroles were scrumpy.
Real value for the novel experience, credit to the management in training the wait staff, could improve on the air conditioning, and possible additional menu items.

I am sorry to say, but this has nothing to do with enjoy dinner with all your sences exept your eyes.
It is more or less like having pricy average food in a cheap extremly noisy pitch black dark fast food chain eatery.
The concept is a very nice idea, but the realization far away from exeptable.
I will never go there again.

Great experience, it is pitch black indeed. As to compensate the loss of sight, the remaining senses became more intense. I never realized how much fat salmon has. We first thought the cook used flavor enhancer, but no, it was the real taste.
I second HTB, use your hands and feed each other.

totally agree with what Tomi said
the food is far from its price. and the service is ok. however it seems impossible asking for something extra...
final word is... once in the lifetime thing...

A very good guide, thomas as for explanations and service.
The food a little bit pricy as is the wine but the concept is interesting.
Shall give a try once guys.
cheers

Tried out this joint recently and I must say, very disappointing.
The cod fish that arrived was rotten and tasted like it was out in the shanghai heat too long. My other party ordered the steak, and while it was not rotten, was done very bland, sauce was too watery and not enough "taste".
All in all, I would not recommend this joint.
