went to PURE which i guess is sugar. you know, when it first opened, the food was great and the fish fresh. this time, every order really was barely passable. definately won't return.

After 4 years living in shanghai i've been hanging out in xxintiandi in first 2 years. I'd been sick and tired of the band playing all over this tourist area. Decided to hang out in the bund but the same old shit you get either you have to pay to get in and pay for bad cocktails and service. Finally, Sugar opened and there's a reason to come back in xintiandi. whatever they said against the place that's their opinion but for me i love this place, the interior itself, the dessert, the party concept and the way they brand the place and the service is improving. I met Leo, and he is fun fun, and entertaining guy. This place lots of energy any problem you will encounter....look for Leo and he will fix the problem quickly. He is very service oriented person. Girls Club amazing...friday party WOW. Cocktails are amazing its worth waiting and even a bit expensive. Keep up the good work and i will bring my friends and my visitors to hang out there. Sugar is the reason why you have to come back in Xintiandi.

I've been to a couple of the girls club nights before and both times have been really fun and pretty much as promised. The slumber party did have skin care tips and stuff but that was a few weeks ago and I heard last week was a spoof beauty pageant so maybe you saw an old flyer somewhere? I didn't go so don't know what it was like but the playgirl one was brilliant (as I'm sure the other ladies present will agree, hee hee). I like that there is no entry fee and it really is no boys allowed. The atmosphere was great, service was fine (can be a bit slow at times but its always worth the wait for a decent cocktail in this city!) and the music is always good. In fact, generally I really like Sugar and have had some of my best nights out in Shanghai there!

The only thing good about Sugar's ladies night is the music. The event entitled: Girls Club Slumber Party" promissed to be a "playground for woman to get together, pamper themselves and have fun" It was meant to begin at 9pm (20 minutes later is "began")with a complimentary goodie bag (the hostess went around to the tables to ask how long you would stay as if asking if you were worth her time and the free goode bag - and the goodie bag consisted of a skanky pink metallic thong bikini that might fit a 7 year old girl and a princess crown), manicures (there was 1-2 manicurists total so needless to say very few had the opportunity to get a manicure), professional skincare tips (not sure where that was),and much more (is that refering to the swarm of models (female not male) that entered at about 9:30). If that wasnt enough the wait staff was rude and service was slow. Once you did receive your drinks you were served with a check before you even had a chance to take a sip and then consistantly proded to pay the bill - not the relaxing ladies night that they advertise. Having said that --- Sugar - the actual venue - is nice and perhaps is a a good time if you dont want a ladies night pampering and just want a night out.

went there saturday night - very relaxed atmosphere, a bit "loungy" and great deserts/desert cocktails. I do not like most of shanghais "creative" cooks as they seem often not to realize that tastes they mix together do not fit - BUT: in this case it is just great. It's the perfect sensation if you just can guess there is a very little blue cheese in the chocolate, but you are not hundred percent sure - because the balance is so perfect. Service was perfect, but there were not too many people, so perhaps not a benchmark night. Music has just the right level so that you can still have an easy conversation. we will definitely go again.

Really like this place!! Without doubt the best desserts I have ever had or at least on par with my Grandmas (Just in case she reads this lol) Took me a while to find it as Im not too familiar with xintaindi but its just next to kabb. There Friday night rocks, Had my brother in town, who loves to party, and it was just such a fun night. We were meant to go to Attica but stayed almost till the cleaners came in!!

Sugar is a nice place in xintiandi. Its very convenient coz i live a block away. The place has potential to be a happening place as long they have to fix their service. I have a group of friends and we don't get any service. we have to wait for 30 minutes to get an attention and the bottom line is another 30 minutes for the drink.........and the drinks arrived disgusting their long island taste like a shit, then a friend of mine order mojitos taste like water. we decided to order a bottle of champagne its not cold. there's no manager around to talk to and i don't want to make a scene. I understand its friday its busy i saw the owners dancing on the table and all these russian chick??? they were wild and open a bottle of champagne sprinkling it to everybody.....ohhhhhhh my god my friends jacket was really wet. Totally disappointed and i am not coming back to this place. my advice for the people to come there just make it sure you pay for the service and for the drinks. its snobby place and prententious place to visit. such a beautiful place with a lousy service and lousy drinks. Good luck to you guys and i hope you can fix it. Shanghai needs more service oriented people who has passion from what they do.........

Excellent. One the same level as similar establishments in Paris, Vienna and Bruxelles. The different ingredients (such as blue cheese and dark chocolate) blend together perfectly and create astonishingly harmonious tastes. Definitely worth going if you like chocolate and sweet stuff.

I've been to Sugar and yes, its cool as hell - well worth a visit and a great place for a first date that you're trying not to scare away. But it really bothers me that SmartShanghai does not disclose its relationship to the restaurant or its conflict of interest in reviewing it. What they've provided isn't a review, its a press release - a giant advertisement and it should be listed as such. Yes this is China, but some journalistic standards should apply .

Editor's note: There is absolutely no relationship between The Collection and SmartShanghai. Although a staff member of The Collection (Caroline Rowe) is one of our freelance writers, the author of the review of the restaurant is a completely different person (Carloyn, not Caroline), and is reflective of her experiences therein. The overall positive nature of the review is indicative of the merit of the restaurant itself and in no way influenced by SmartShanghai's working relationship with the other writer. It is the policy of SmartShanghai to make no tertiary demands of our restaurant reviewers, and all our reviews are the unbiased experiences - - positive or negative - - of their authors.
