Shoka is one of the more stylish Japanese "all you can eat" restaurants. Decor is polished concrete accented with black wood, the soundtrack is samba, and the drink list includes sake cocktails and shochu in addition to the standards. Geared towards residents in the Jing'an district, it's part of the Loft98 complex that includes a related deli, Delish, and "all you can eat" French tapas restaurant Cantine.

From the views it looks like people either love or hate this spot. I actually found myself not feelings particularly strongly about Shoka either way. Yeah, it's not going to be the best Japanese food around (you can tell that they make the food in advance, then just throw it in the freezer until you order it for the most part), but the handmade rolls are tasty and surprisingly large, and the all-you-can-eat menu is probably the longest I've ever seen. Service was pretty bad for the most part, so if you're looking to be well taken care of, this isn't your place. The food comes nicely presented though and there was a hot beef with kim chi dish that was actually very good. I'd go back, but if I weren't doing the all-you-can-eat deal, this place wouldn't be worth the money.

When we walked in the restaurant looked promising with the nice decor and interesting menu, but it turned out to be a terrible experience.

An hour after we ordered we had still not received all of our sushi. The sad part is, the food was actually tasty, but the service ruined it. Each dish that came we asked if they could bring the dishes quicker, but it did no good. We left the restaurant prior to all of our dishes being served and had to go elsewhere to eat since we were still hungry. I've had my share of bad service experiences in China, but this one is at the top of one of the worst.

The food was pretty good but nothing amazing or exciting. The sashimi were fresh unlike some other all-u-can eat places. Tempura were also nicely done, lightly battered and not oily at all. The salads were refreshing but they should cut down on the dressing especially over the rolls as it was overpowering at times. Only real letdown were the fill eggs and salmon roll which were really salty for some reason.

Shoka’s restaurant environment is also another plus point. The décor has an industrial look about it which kind of works. Service was efficient which was a fear of ours having read that they often don’t have enough staff to service all the customers. Although they did forget the odd order, they coped well on our visit even when the restaurant was packed.

Shoka is definitely worth a visit especially as the quality is considerably better than other similar all-u-can eat.

Enjoyed the decor and the food quality is better than the average all-you-can-eat Japanese restaurant, but the poor service completely ruined our dining experience.

Booked a table a day in advance to arrive to a table next to the door (every time someone walked in we'd get an Arctic chill) and had to stand for 10 minutes while they brought in chairs from next door (we didn't arrive early - they were just completely unprepared). Placed our initial order and after waiting 1.5 hours we only received a handful of the order, which mostly consisted of cold dishes. Dishes would come out sporadically in 20-minute intervals, and every time we would ask about of food or complain about the service, they would give us more rice rolls and sake , which either means they ran out of food or were trying to get us drunk and full of rice before we even began eating. Trying to get a server's attention for napkins, more drinks or help cleaning up a spill was like pulling teeth.

We left hungry. Hands down the worst all-you-can-eat restaurant I've visited.
