Shoka is one of the more stylish Japanese "all you can eat" restaurants. Decor is polished concrete accented with black wood, the soundtrack is samba, and the drink list includes sake cocktails and shochu in addition to the standards. Geared towards residents in the Jing'an district, it's part of the Loft98 complex that includes a related deli, Delish, and "all you can eat" French tapas restaurant Cantine.

I admit i did not eat IN..but knowing the area and the owner i opeted for sushi delivery. Difficult when you have an outdated Sherpas guide at home...after 3 tries to find a japanese (Hatsune was a BIT too expensive) we opted for Shoka. I had 20 people to amuse (not feed, just to go with some sparkling). After being told the working ours were not the same as my planned delivery time -i still agreed to order. No mistake. As promised the food arrived in 3 delivery bags..almost no damge (20% sushi deformed i guess). taste: Great. Presentation: disappointing.
I will be back for IN HOUSE testing though...but then Sake bette be on the house.....

Ordered delivery via one of Shanghai's delivery services - it was a huge mistake. I ordered sashimi and received sushi, only to find that each fish piece was approximately the size of a 1 RMB coin. The hand roll was filled sparingly, and the fish was rubbery. Never again.

It took a long time for Shoka to find its place amongs all Japanese restaurants in Shanghai but it manages to create a very nice, cosy and fashionable place to have ones of the best sashimis in town. The 2 menus are great value for money. I used to go there once a week.
Definitely recommended

Definitely nice atmoshere, cosy and classy.
but... to me, it is really no-sense that all people at the same table must drastically choose whether having an all-you-can eat or an a-la-carte menu.
Really, it is the house policy not allowing people at the same table to order differently. Therefore, if you are not so hungry but your friend is, either you accept to undergo the buffet or you move next table from your friend.. or you go to whatever teppaniaki in town, which grants to its customer a well deserved freedom!

It took me a while to try this restaurant because of the bad reviews but I finally had dinner there last night with my wife, who is japanese by the way,and we both were very pleasantly surprised.
The sashimi combo was very fresh with a beautiful presentation. We also tried the Marylin Monroll and Maki Me Hot rolls which were both very good and a nice change from traditional japanese food.
The tempura were nice and crispy, and the urchin sushi was some of the best we ever had. On a less positive note the salmon roe was not so impressive.
The service was friendly but the dishes arrive a bit too fast.
We also had a great bottle of sake, don't remember the name but it was described as having a refreshing minty taste, which was going down really well chilled in an ice bucket.
All in all we both had a very pleasant experience and will definitely go back soon with more friends !
