Deception is the word that came to mind (and mouth ) when I went there yesterday. I was there with my boss three weeks ago and I was pleased with the tapas and the service. Yesterday, I ordered a glass of wine and I was surprised to have a third glass of Merlot. I don't like to quibble but I felt it wasn't really fair when the " art of table" stipulates that a glass is 35 cl. I had 10 cl at most. So I asked gently to the waitress if I could have more. And she kept saying they only give this amount and this is a regular size. Last time with my boss, I got like twice more. I should bring some grey-haired people next time. Seeing that she would stick to the rules, I asked if I could see the manager. By the time he came, I must have seen two other waiters telling me the same thing. Finally, the manager showed up and also found refuge in the so called rule that he wouldn't dare to break (the one that he himself established).
The conversation was polite so no big deal. But since this request, the service turned to the worst. No napkin, no seasoning, waiters urging to clean the table while we were still eating, putting the bill under my nose while we were clearly not finished and even using a lame excuse; they were gonna close the cash desk ... at 23h45!!!
I know Xintiandi is by far not the best place to expect a good service but this one wins it all.
Good point though: Tapas are good.
I would recommend this little jewel to anyone. My pal the Kingman and I stopped in for a most excellent lunch and drinks. We had only planned to have a quick drink or two but the food leaving the kitchen caught our eye. The presentation and artistry was excellent. The staff was also quick excellent. The bar staff was more than eager to engage us both. I was particularly impressed by the gentleman preparing the various salads they offer while sitting at the bar. He was highly detailed and focused on making both appearance and more important taste. If you are looking for a variety of both local and western food including the good old american hamburger with a gourmet flair then Fountain is the ticket. You can bet both of us will navigate our way back to Fountain for another excellent meal.
