Editor's Description

Last updated: November 24th, 2009

Located on the hip and trendy Xingle Lu bar circuit (along with LOgO Bar and Dada), Anar is one of the few bastions for Chinese clubbers who are discerning about their club and their club music. It's split into two rooms, with a tasteful, chill lounge in the front and more of a straight club in the back. Music is varied in the two sound-proofed rooms, with usually loungier stuff in the front and louder club music in the back -- house, electro, techno, minimal et. al. A rotating cast of Shanghai's and Beijing’s most respected DJs are on the decks, one-off and monthly parties are frequent (check the events listings for details), and the crowd is mainly young, fashionable Chinese and their Western admirers. Sometimes the covert the dance floor in the back for live bands and they host a popular jam night every Sunday. Drink specials rotate depending on what the party is, but generally it’s in the 40rmb a drink range.
