Eduardo Vargas' highly successful comfortable eatery has become a brunch favorite among expats. Take off your shoes and eat sitting on the floor in a bundle of plush pillows, or head upstairs for normal tables. The chef's Peruvian origins are present in some of the main courses but Azul also offers American cuisine, such as blueberry pancakes and omletes.

We were there on a saturday evening for some Tapas. The location is nice, nothing special though. The staff is friendly and eager to pleas, but unfortunately not well-trained.
We ordered five Tapas, including: Feta Cheese, Octopus, Mushrooms, Beef Tapa, and Lamp Loin. All the dishes came quickly, one after another. Soon after we finished our first dish, the whole table was full of food. The whole purpose of eating Tapas is about taking time to eat slowly, and enjoy the food while chit-chatting with your companions. Here, we just felt rushed. As for the food itself, this would be the one time where we are making an excption and complain about "portion size". the Tapas have been to big with too much food on it. They basically looked and tasted like ordinary Chinese dishes!!! We like Chinese food, don't get us wrong, but we've been looking forward to Spanish tapas and dropped a good chunk of change for some not so Spanish-like food. In terms of the taste, all the dishes had a sweetness to them (a bit Shanghainese). The dip for the bread also came with Chinese hot chili sauces - again, we didn't realize that we were signing ourselves up for a Chinese restaurant in disguise.
We also ordered red wine, but I won't go to deep into that. Let's just say the staff has no clue about how to serve it properly.
Over all, it was very disappointing and at least for Tapas, we can't recommend the place.

Azul

Azul is serial restaurateur Eduardo Vargas's flagship, and Latin-ish casual dining restaurant with easy, stylish decor. Brunch here was one of the first decent non-hotel options in Shanghai, and its popularity is as enduring as its glacial service is excruciating. Two courses, 130rmb; three courses, 160rmb. Any dessert for 40rmb extra. Comes with a drink (cocktail, smoothie, juice) and coffee or tea. 11am-4pm.

It wouldn't be Shanghai without a combination creperie and furniture gallery. Yes, at Blue Chair you can fill up on chocolate crepes and purchase a, um, blue chair. Desserts are all fine; "meal" crepes are often runny - and in all the wrong places. View listing »

Mesa & Manifesto

A spacious former warehouse turned "all meals" venue, Mesa's Continental menu has suffered from an inconsistent kitchen. Still, it remains a firm expat favorite, though it's probably more for its excellent second-floor terrace and lounge and the well.. View listing »
