Situated on Gubei's Hongmei Pedestrian Street Mexicolindo does a variety of Tex-Mex standards like burritos, enchiladas, tacos and fajitas. There was a time when this place was about your only option in town for a decent Mexi-style meal. But with some recent additions to the scene, this place falls far behind in terms of quality.

I wanted to write a quick follow-up review on Mexicolindo, maybe my favorite divey Mexican joint in Shanghai. Think: more Cantina Agave and less Maya, as far as offering value-for-money Mexican-American food in a laidback setting. However the service here is better than Agave's and the setting isn't dark and dingy like Zapata's.

The food is very average, with standards like nachos, hard-shell tacos, enchiladas, burritos - all junky but passable. The upside is their frozen margaritas, which are a lot more palatable than the sweet and sour laden, stomach-killing ones at Agave or Big Bamboo. My favorite is still Maya - both for the flavor and copious alcohol - however Lindo's are a fraction of the price.

Even better are Saturdays and Sundays, with RMB 25 margaritas and half-priced pitchers. Located in Gubei, I can see how it can be a jaunt for some people just looking to get a junk food/alcohol fix. However if you're looking to make an afternoon of it and want to sit outside and get sloshed on the cheap, it's not a bad choice.

We have been there twice last week. Nice Margaritas, Plenty of food,
and it tasted good. WE have tried a couple of Mexican/TexMex in Shanghai, but have not found a better one yet. It is coming close to the Mexican restaurants we visited in Richmond, Virgina.

And guys. If you really want to have mexican food, you need to travel to Mexico to get it authentic. But this is with every food.
    Pass on this salsaria, please!

Things were looking good when they brought the freshly fried tortilla chips out and the pico de gallo sauce encouraged us! Possibly, another decent restaurant? We asked if they had any 'hot' salsa which was soon delivered. It had a strange start but a nice long spicy finish so we are still thinking, 'this could be good'.

Sadly things mostly went downhill from there. The Black Bean soup was white! And it wasn't even because they used white beans (they were actually pinto), it was from milk. Never, never, never in my life have I had Mexican Black Bean soup with milk. Back to the kitchen for that dish. The Quesadilla's were huge and enough for all four in the group. Very filling so maybe we should have stopped there. Two from our group had fish tacos, which were horrible. The fish was deep fried like British Fish & Chips, not grilled like you would get in Mexico, or the Southwestern US. Another had chicken tamales, which they said were actually OK. The nail in the coffin, though, was the Beef Tacos. Pretty nauseating.

Why, oh why, do so many places get only 1/4 or 1/2 the dishes right? Adios Mexico Lindo!

    My recommendation: Quesadilla's & beer. That's it.

Mexicolindo is located at the end of the Hongmei Entertainment Street (the end closer to the highway) in Gubei. I went here for dinner on a Tuesday night with a large group of friends for their 50% off food special. After reading mixed reviews on CW and a very convincing "The best Mexican food in Shanghai! Trust me, I've been everywhere" review by a previous SMSH user I was excited to tantalize my tastebuds with some real Mexican flavor!

Upon being seated, they served us baskets of homemade tortilla chips as well as two saucers of pico de gallo and red salsa sauce. I wasn't really a fan of the sauces but the chips were fresh, nicely salted and crisp! For a main, I had their fish tacos which came two tacos per order with a side of flavored rice topped with pico de gallo and a side of refried beans with a smidgen of mozzarella on top. Normally retailing for 68RMB, but with the Tuesday happy hour, was 34RMB. After my first couple of bites, I was really let down with how flavorless the dish was, from the rice, to the beans, to the fish in the taco. To top it off, the tacos were served with only one little lime wedge - smaller than the limes that come in a glass of gin and tonic. I normally eat tacos with a mini mountain of limes at my disposal but knowing that this is China (TIC) I settled for dousing my 2nd taco with the red salsa from the complementary nachos. I took a peek at what people around the table had ordered and the two friends flanking me ordered the taquitos and quesadilla. The taquitos looked a bit questionable but the quesadilla looked scrumptious (and tasted pretty good according to my friend). Mexicolindo also offers pizza options for those who are less inclined towards Mexican food and our group ordered a few of these as well.

Feeling a bit unsattisfied with my taco experience, I decided to peruse their dessert menu and settled on their fried ice cream (40RMB). The ice cream came as a single scoop encased in a jacket of fried breading and corn flakes. The ice cream came out a bit melted and the casing was a bit soggy but it was ok since I like my ice cream a little melted. The sweet cinnamon flavorings and creamy ice cream totally satisfied my craving and I scooped up every last bit.
The service here was quite attentive and courteous but for a Tuesday night, despite the 50% off prices, the restaurant was 75% empty. I feel that perhaps if/when I ever make it back to Mexicolindo it would only be during their Tuesday night happy hour and I will shy away from their taco options. Next time if I'm looking for "The best Mexican food in Shanghai! Trust me, I've been everywhere" experience, I'll stick to somewhere in downtown since the cab fare alone would cover the 50% difference of the happy hour prices.
