A delightful little café in arguably the French Concession's prettiest neighborhood, Arch is not to be missed. The space is quite small (be sure to make dinner reservations!) and accompanying atmosphere very unique. Usually busy throughout the day, Arch makes a mean breakfast, pastas, burgers, and salads, with a decent drink menu to boot. Mondays and Wednesdays are non-smoking.
Arrogant manager who openly shows unfair preference to his regular guests. Knowing that this place is exiguous and always packed, I booked a table in advance. Once there, when I announced my reservation, I was told that no booking was made under my name. I insisted, telling the waiter that I did make the phone call by myself (I'm not suffering from schizophrenia or parkison yet) the waiter went and talk to the manager and dared to get back to me and to reply that I was wrong. I can bear bad service or overpriced food, but not a manager who argue that his customers are lying.
went there with my friend last weekends, we had soups, courses and some desserts, the feeling bring u to happiness.
In fact the point in meal is not only the food but the environments and the mood
For Sunday brunch, Arch is definitely over price and the food is so so if not dissapointing. I love fine dining at a nece restaurant and I certainly won\'t mind paying the price (say like Jean Georges, expensive but you get what you pay for!), unlike Arch. So what if the place is nicely designed, packed with (out of date) foreign magazine, at the end of the day, you come to a restaurant to eat and not merely for the ambiance. Good ambiance is not an excuse for lousy food and over price tag.... oh, let\'s not talk about the service here...
There are a ton of Western restaurants whose owners know very little, if anything, about the service and food industry, and especially how to provide an adequate eating experience.
Most of the advertised spots border on amateur and quick dollar mentality with overpriced food that cost a fraction to make as in comparison to what a person pays, low quality, untrained staff, unfriendly service, no policies developed for how to deal with customer complaints, etc. It as though, since we're in China we don't have to be professional. And this extends into many other markets as well. It's a thriving mentality, to lower yourself to the local mentality because you know you can get away with it, and it speaks clearly about what the real goal is here—the almighty yuan!
Walking into most restaurants you must ask for a glass of water and then you get the hard sale to buy a 2 rmb bottle of water for 10 rmb, or something to that extent.
No reason to only blame one, as so many others are guilty of the same thing. When are these companies going to change? Since there seems to be an endless market of people moving in and out of Shanghai, these places will pathetically survive on their adverts and friends who come to these blogs and write ridiculously subjective blog statements.
These restaurants need to do some big self-criticism and learn what makes a good venue, a good venue. Hint, hint! It's not how much money you spend on interior design, and how aloof you and your staff are towards your customers. So I will give all of the Shanghai Restaurants a little reminder: The Golden Rule of the Service Industry—The Customer Is always Right!
Crap... what happened to this place???!!! Is it not the idea of any place to get BETTER with time? Not god-awful worse??
I called myself a regular here... but no more. How many brain cells does it take to assure hot french fries. No wait = properly fried ones even! What happened to the once royal portions? And what is the idea with the menu = that I can read it??? How can a regular coffee be with milk? Why do we need to remind the staff just how our food is supposed to look like?? And what's with this pimp-look uniforms?? All of a sudden the once trendy Arch has gone tacky-local... why??
This place went down, way down. Fast... They opened a second venue, and it aint any better there....
sad sad sad... RIP Arch... we miss how you once were. Thank god for places like Whisk on huaihai!!!
Last night was my birthday, I went to Arch to have dinner because I want to try the blueberry cheesecake. I am a cheesecake lover :) The food was nice and delicious, especially the salmon and burger. The burger is juicy & yummy. I will back again to try the lamb chop because they sold out yesterday. They have a nice wine list and not that expensive. The wine that recommended by the waiters is nice and they have a good service also. As I know from the review, the cheese cake is a must try but I’m quite disappointed because the cheesecake still frozen. I take away the cheese cake, but the taste is nice. Next time I will ask them to serve the cheese cake earlier so will be defrosted before I have it. The price is reasonable.
The food at Arch is in my experience mediocre at best.
On my last visit I returned a steak to the kitchen, which had been ordered \'rare\' and had turned up grey and dry.
Five minutes later the same steak was back in front of me, but now it was cunningly hidden on a fresh plate under a pile of reheated bechamel (they gave me the wrong sauce too, incidentally). The steak was inevitably even tougher than before, having spent the last five minutes being reheated under the grill.
yeah I liked it a lot, I went cuz people kept insisting about food/quality... only to be told by the bar manager they are about to raise prices! hahahah! Should we enjoy it while it lasts??
Anyways, my friend had an awesome looking burger, I tried their dinner special swordfish, and the dessert was hellagood. No smokers either cuz they have wednesdays as a smoke free day. That's cool. It's fun watching people battle over getting a table. And if that is not entertainment enough, the street scenes are just as funny. Think pl-clad watermelon salesmen and women, illegal parking manouvers while cops watch, I even saw tourist groups being dropped off by bus load. This place is fun!
Droped by for dinner, order small green salad and the beef burger. The salad is not cold and crisp and was mediocre. But the burger and the acompanying fries was excellent. Will definately go back again. Burger, salad and a glass of coke come to 91 rmb.
I have been to ARCH couple of times and they never fail to surprise me. Food is excellent and reasonable with huge portions. Its a value for money. Try their chef salad and beef burger. The best in Shanghai! Wine and cocktail selections are also good. Friendly staff, friendly customer. You\'ll never be alone here. Try it , You\'ll love it!
Small but comfortable. Excellent menui for lunch. Had mixed salad, shrimp pasta, grilled salmon and two iced teas for under 200 RMB. The food was excellent.
This place is absolutely fabulous,Stylishly designed sleek interior, laid-back vibe, design magazines and FREE unlimited Net access (wired and wireless). Burgers and Steaks are a must try. It goes well with a pumpkin soup and a glass of redwine! Cheesecake is heavenlly for dessert.
If your not into food Try their one of a kind cock tails done by a professional bar tender. Definitely the best cocktails in Shanghai!
Well what can I say about a terrible packed model-hangout where everyone is just to arrogant. Have to admit the food and service is really top, and the variety of good beers goes well with a nice 250 grams steak. If less crowded maybe a nice place. The bartender is foreigner and a really friendly pal.
we had a splendid night yesterday @ Arch enjoying super-nice cocktails and wonderful service. Angelo and Harry are the greatest Hosts ever - people there are quite stylo but super-friendly and we met some interesting faces. Music is a nice electro-retro-easylistening-fusion. All in all a beautiful night...
Ive been to ARCH Bar a couple of times and i must say the food is very good and reasonably priced. Try the Tomato Mozarella Salad its fabulous, Beef burger with Bacon and cheese is superb, New york cheesecake is to die for. The best in Shanghai., They also have sunday brunches and Lunch specials. Try it and you know what im talking about!
I have been there one time now, but its a pretty cool cafe with a special design, but I think totally overpriced like many other places in Shanghai.
Anyway not a bad place to get started for the evening.
