Kagen is the teppanyaki spin-off of wildly popular Jap-fusion restaurant Haiku, which is next door. Decor is same upscale, modern minimalism with lots of smooth stones and the ingredients are several cuts above the all-you-can-eats. Sets from 230-400rmb per person.

The food is really yummy, you can get very addicted to the Teppanyaki. The chefs are always very entertaining and its a bit of a novelty to bring out of town guests to a spot like this - Japanese in Shanghai!!!
Guaranteed a great experience every time and of course the food too.
If there are a group of you for special occasions - ask for the downstairs rooms - they are usually quite good about this.

Last Friday me and a couple of friends went to Kagen for someone's birthday party. They have the 228RMB all you can eat and all you can drink deal and I gotta say: it's really good value-for-money. You can just taste the freshness of the ingredients. Only downside to the restaurant is that you have to put in your last order at 9.30pm already, and since we arrived at about 8.30pm, we only had one hour left to have our dinner. But rest assured; we came in hungry and we all left like hippos.
I admit the service is sometimes kinda slow (drinks, hello?) but you can solve that problem by ordering a lot of drinks at a time! The catch to the all you can eat and drink deal, is that you have to eat everything you ordered, otherwise they'll charge you for the dishes you didn't finish. This makes sense though, as they work with fresh ingredients and that way you can be sure that you're not having someone's leftovers from yesterday.
All in all, I'd say it's a good dining experience, and a hell of a lot fun when you're with friends. Definitely worth a shot!

Kagen has never disappointed. You have to book on weekends as it gets quite busy and the place is not huge but during the week, same day booking is fine. The food is probably one of the best all you can eat places, while drinks are just standard sake and beer and juice. Strangely it's the one place that don't seem to have japanese tea on the all you can drink menu.
The decor is clean, modern and comfortable, it would otherwise be a great place for a date or business dinner, but for groups under 8 ppl, it's shared tables so you don't really get a chance for intimate conversations.
All in all great place to go with friends, large group is the best, book the room downstairs!!!
