Sichuan Citizen is a nice place for a slightly better but not too over the top meal. I have been there on a couple of occasions and was always satisfied with the food and service.

The aubergines are really good, the crispy beef with plum sauce is a MUST order on the menu, seriously don't skip that one, it IS that good. Everything else I tried was good, not exceptional but still value for money. I love spicy food, but beware if you are not really into the extremely spicy/fire-in-the-mouth kind of food, because Sichuan food can be VERY spicy. There is a guide in the menu to measure the spiciness of the dish (0 to 3 chilis depending on the level of spiciness), so be careful and if in doubt, remember you can always ask if it is possible to make the dish you like less spicy.

I recommend Sichuan Citizen, but at the same time it is not necessarily the place you should absolutely run to. It is nice. The food is tasty, price is a little bit high but still reasonable (I usually end up paying less than 200 for two, but we don't drink) and the menu is fully translated into English, which is always a nice touch in Chinese restaurants.

I like Sichuan Citizen. I have been eating there for half a decade now and I love their simple fare and inexpensive prices. When I go there I don’t expect to be blown away by exotic new dishes, or wowed by the service staff, I go to enjoy a foreign friendly Chinese meal. Trust me, when your foreign friends come to town the last thing on their mind will be a bowl of “traditional” duck blood soup or sautéed cow’s stomach, they will want to eat a Chinese meal that is Chinese while at the same time remaining vaguely familiar. For that I would recommend the鱼香肉丝 (Yú xiāng ròu sī) or their tasty beef and broccoli. Their hot and sour soup ranks among the best in town.

As others have mentioned, the basil martini is really a highlight and unlike anything you can get anywhere else. Its truly one of the best drinks I've ever had.

Keeping all this in mind I happily give this restaurant four stars. It’s not an explosion of designer food, it will never top the charts of a Zagat survey, but you will find everything on their menu is tasty and satisfying. It is the simple, inexpensive home-style cooking that keeps it packed to capacity every night of the week. Give it a try; most of you won’t be disappointed.

This used to be my favorite go-to place for my visitors who wanted to try Sichuan fare for the first time. I loved the basil martini, the warm contemporary vibe, attentive service and spot on spicy delicious food. This was 3 years ago...now Sichuan citizen is in the toilet.

    1. No white wine glasses? They serve expensive wine by the glass in oversized bordeaux glasses! There is a reason why wine has designated glasses.

    2. Food served in cracked worn out dishes??? Your dishes are not cheap, if its costs you are worried about why not get simple IKEA dishes for the sake of your diners who have to risk getting a tooth chipped from possible broken enamel in their food.

    3. Your beef slices with sichuan peppers tasted like it had been boiled in left over bath water then smothered with peppers - I don't know how you can explain that one since I had it at least 3 times before and did not have that experience.

    4. Your tables are chipped and have water drop bubbles, I was afraid to closely inspect my seat. We love your place please take care of it.

Your attentive manager saved the day but I really hope you do something before you lose your loyal customers who deserve better than this. I am now looking for a new
Sichuan place to take my out of town guests. Also cost saving ideas like buying oversized glasses hurts your clientele.

You get 1 point for not replacing sichuan peppers with a cheaper option which seems to be what you have done with everything else. And please teach your staff how to explain the menu!!

I've been to Sichuan Citizen a couple of times now, and I have to say, that it has not disappointed me yet.

This is my go-to restaurant for any occasion - whether it be a catch up, bringing clients or bringing friends who are visiting from overseas. It has enough authenticity to pass for authentic Sichuan food, on the other hand, western enough for all foreigners to enjoy without questioning too much. The cocktails here are also great - always find myself drowning in their special little green drink - the Basil Drop COcktail.

Service is great, fast and efficient, and a big upside is most of them can speak english. Big plus in my books, as the extent of my Chinese is "yi ge pi jiu".

With Elephante, Liquid Laundry and Gemma around the corner, I am also surprised at the very reasonable prices at this Dong Hu Lu location.

all ticks in my books at Sichuan CItizen !
