Guyi is an institution of a Hunan restaurant in Shanghai, among both foreigners and locals, for its upscale environment and excellent fiery food, unaffected by local tastes. It's a step up from almost all other Hunan restaurants in Shanghai, and though quality has wavered in the past, is still a solid bet. Cumin-crusted ribs
(ziran paigu) are their signature. No reservations after 6.30pm, so expect to wait.

If you are a lover of flavor and spice- this place is a must go spot.
Recommend fishhead with the green and red chillies - looks hotter than it tastes.
Ribs - crispy and finger licking good... Pumpkin - u gotta love pumpkin - huge portion..
This place is not a date place - too loud and not intimate. Go here with friends that like to EAT! Advise to book in advance... Gets really crazy busy in the evenings.
I cannot praise Gu Yi enough. I know there's a trend among the expats been here +10 (like myself) to prefer other Hunan eateries but Gu Yi still delivers the goods (although I must admit there are bad days in between). I go there with my wife at least once a week and wed been doing so for years.
If you like spicy this ist he place. ma la shang gang - spicy tofu skin and of cause the famous hong shao rou. Must try.
Don't trust foreigners who say Gu Yi (both oft hem) is no good. They are both fantastic and ranks on my top 10 best places ever!
