What is wrong with this place? Did the owner land from Jupiter, or is he/she just never around to witness the idiocy of the staff?

I've been to 3Top on two occasions and each one left me feeling bitter about the terrible service. The first time for dinner was just an absolute mess. I seriously question the intellectual capacity of the managerial and wait staff at this restaurant. Dishes.... Wrong! Timing.... Wrong (soup after dessert? SOUP AFTER DESSERT?)... And the manager, oh my...

The second time, my friend had his going away party in their very beautiful garden. We had reserved the backroom bar, which in all fairness is an awesome little venue for a kickass party. The dinner went off fairly well, with decent food and moderately better service from my first visit. However, when the party moved into the back room everything went to hell.

The manager was made very clear that the party would be arriving in two groups. One group arrives for dinner, and the second group arrives later for drinks. We moved into the bar around 830pm, and from then on until about 11pm the manager was HECKLING my friend (on his last night in Shanghai) about the number of people arriving at the party. WE'RE NOT MEETING COSTS! WE"RE NOT MEETING COSTS!! Unbelievable! Hold your horses guy! Everyone's coming!

And come they did. No respite from the manager however to my buddy.. Nobody's wearing the bracelets! Tell them to put on the bracelets! (for free-flow).. No dude! You're the manager, do your job! You get the money, you get the bracelets and get lost! I finally saw my friend literally pleading to the manager with his palms outstretched to leave him alone and not ruin his last night in Shanghai. I walked up to the manager and told him that if he ruins my friend's last night anymore there will be some trouble.

On top of that, I had gone over to speak with a group of Singaporean women after I saw them in a confrontation with the manager, and asked them what was wrong. They told me that they had asked the manager politely if the staff could be a little bit more friendly and the manager got pissed.

I don't have very high expectations for service in this city, but 3Top is the bottom of the barrel.

I had dinner with 6 friends there. We got 2 dishes we didn't order. The manager didn't understand much of what was going on. The food was not fresh made and quite oily.
When drinking tea after our dinner, we got charged 10RMB for asking for an additional empty cup so we could share the tea. Amazing! The manager did not feel like explaining it, and just walked away when we asked what that was on the bill. It's not the 10RMB that matters, just the fact you get charged for using a cup!

With couple bottles of wine and 70RMB water, our bill ended up to be +350RMB/pp, definitely not worth it. (I had dinner the other week in a nice French restaurant for the same amount, but good quality food, nice service and double amount of wine.)
Fusion in this restaurant means you can find dishes from all over asia (from sushi to curry dishes and nan bread), but the dishes itself are nothing special.

Conclusion: this place has a nice garden, but that's it. Stay away if you care about service and the quality of the food.

OK.. first off, the Afternoon Tea Set is only 98RMB for 2. So, I knew not to expect magic. But what I did not expect was the terrible, terrible service. I mean.. come on.. it's 3 Top.. it's a beautiful place, which is frequented by many people, both lau wai and locals (albeit richer). Don't they have a reputation to uphold?

Gripe #1:
They seated us at a table that was just a table. Just us, 4 chairs a table and a table cloth. No utensils, no napkins. ziltch. I thought it was weird, but I let it slide.

Gripe #2:
The afternoon tea itself was alright, most of the stuff was pre-made but it took ages for it to arrive. Dude, the thing just needs assembly. How long does that take?

Gripe #3:
The wait staff. OMG.. when our food arrived I asked for utensils, the waiter brought plates and he actually ASKED me.. if I wanted forks... errr.. DUH! Then I asked (nicely, too) if he could check the status of a pot of tea which I ordered, he actually had the audacity to sigh at me. Like.. WHAT? Then, following that, my tea arrived (hot water and lipton bag) with a cup. Yes.. just a pot of tea and a cup. No sugar, no milk, no spoon. By then I had already given up so I just drank the tea, paid and left.

So, my point is.. 3Top? Never again!

jim76 - great, but pricy Asian cuisine nouvelle and a bombastic bar at the back of the ground floor restaurant, both with a gorgeous view of spot lit trees in Xiangyang Park.
