Sometimes you eat upscale burgers here and think to yourself, "wow, that was really good....for Shanghai." There is always something missing, always something that makes you look forward to that dinner back home with friends where you go to the burger place you've been drooling for over the previous few months. Friends from burger-land, your Shanghai savior has arrived in the form of a quaint little place on Taikang Lu: New York Steak and Burger was hands down the best burger I've had this side of the Pacific. The meat was tender, wasn't packed too tightly, and all the toppings stayed exactly where they should, on top. Some restaurants go a bit far with jamming condiments and other delicacies inside the burger patty itself, the guys at New York Steak and Burger are purists, leaving you to revel in the fact that you are there to taste the burger and its great beef, not some flavor to mask its shortcomings.
The steak, had by my accomplice, was equally impressive, especially for the price. He paid around 250RMB for a prime cut...but I was too busy concentrating on my 1.5 burgers (yeah, we ordered a second one). The price for the burgers ranges from 50-68 RMB...entirely reasonable considering most other places in town are even more expensive for something not even half as good as this.
The decor was nice and relaxing, no bells, whistles, or ridiculous neon lights like you'll find at other Taikang burger establishments. The beer selection is perfect and reasonably priced, with never-seen-in-shanghai-before selections like Saranac Microbrews, and the old reliable Sam Adams, for only 35 RMB.
Nothing bad to say about this place, literally nothing. Go for a date, for a biz dinner, just make sure you go hungry...
