Burgers are okay, but the real star here are those off-the-hook spiked shakes. Ridiculously good. Same sort of thing made popular at the Roosevelt Hotel in LA. Ive had the Grandmas and one other one, forget which. They are like 50-55RMB. They come in a glass, but you also get the "extra" part of it in the steel shaker on the side, so it;s like one and a half shakes. None better in the city.
    I don't get it

I see this place getting rave reviews everywhere --- winning all sorts of "Best Burger" awards, even. But after tonight's visit, my friends and I were simply left wondering why.

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that BB was bad, by any means. It just wasn't...exceptional. Especially not when you have genuinely kickass burger options at New York Steak and Burger and a couple other places around town as well, for the same price or for less money than you'd spend at BB.

I had the Tuscan burger. On the menu, it sounds earth-shatteringly amazing. Promising "sun-dried tomatoes" and "eggplant relish" along with a delightful "garlic aioli," the menu entry promises a burger worth writing home about. But that's not what I was served.

The burger I received, in its defense, was decently sized. This is where the compliments will end.

I ordered it cooked medium, and while the center of a burger cooked medium shouldn't be piping hot, the burger's temperature seemed to imply it'd been sitting around for a while before being plated and served to me. Instead of what my mind envisioned --- a juicy patty topped with melting cheese, a generous layer of sun-dried tomatoes, and finally, a heaping mound of eggplant relish --- let's just say reality fell short.

The burger seemed tired. Like it'd had a rough day, and couldn't be bothered to really get dressed to the nines for me tonight. Atop the cheese was a meager scoop of diced eggplants and red bits, which I assume were the aforementioned sun-dried tomatoes. When spread out, there was plenty of cheese and patty still visible. The garlic aioli, served on the side, was alright. No zing. Sort of an ambiguously odd-tasting mayonnaise. There wasn't any lettuce or tomato anywhere in sight.

But the real kicker was the head waitress's attitude. She is colder than the room in my drafty lane house with a busted heater. We'd ordered some boozy milkshakes, see, and while most of them were good -- actually, the milkshakes are the only item we got that I'd say was worth the money -- my friend's didn't taste of booze at all. So he did what any red-blooded man would do, and asked for just a bit more alcohol. "Actually," the waitress replied snootily, and I'd italicize the word "actually" if the option were present, "there is a standard (again, italicized) measurement of alcohol in there. If you want another one, it's 40 RMB." BB -- are you trying to ensure repeat visits, or is the price of a few drops' more booze too high to pay for the 10 of us to come back again?

In sum: what you get ain't worth what you pay. The general consensus of the party upon leaving was, "I'm still hungry". Head to New York Steak & Burger over this place any day.
