Editor's Description

Paulaner is the most successful German restaurant chain in Shanghai and boasts three grandiose outlets on both sides of the Huangpu, including one in Xintiandi (although that one's mainly for tourists). All your standard German dishes are available herein –- schnitzels, sausage platters, et. al. -- as well as Paulaner's own brand of beer, which comes in wheat and lager. Paulaner is known for said beer and it's even available in selected convenience stores around town.

A good venue for larger groups, Paulaner turns into a good old fashion beer fest on the weekends with much drunken revelry and horrible dancing -- especially the one in Xintiandi, which hosts Filipino cover bands.

The outlets on Fenyang Lu and Pudong offer great outdoor seating, and the more standard German beer garden experience (patio seating at the Xintiandi outlet is pretty negligible).

Like all German restaurants, a meal at Paulaner isn't cheap, but if you're looking for dependable German food, good beer, and a good tipsy time, this Brauhaus is a safe bet.

I came there last week end with my girlfriend for half price menu because of their birthday. I really liked the atmosphere on the first floor...however we were stuck on the 3rd floor with a too small table and not a very convenient place, everyone walking accross your table...we took some salmon salad for starters but unfortunnyl it wasn't fresh enough, then I had some grilled beef steak which was not so bad but what the fuck were those stuff with it?vegetables?paper?I don't know. When I paid the waiter was like waiting for the bill, almost seat on y legs... 1 entree + 2 main dishes + 2 drinks=280RMB...which means that it would have cost me 560RMB without 50% discount...OK for 280RMB but no way for 560RMB!!!

It will never compare to a real Biergarten in München, but still it's a great place to escape from a China-attack day. A little oasis of German quality. Really great to sit outside in summer... I like it.

0.3l Beer = 65 RMB (local brewed) 0.3l Evian = 65 RMB any further questions??? The perfect place to show others that you have money, no, sorry, that your company(!!) has money. As a German I feel ashame that people in Shanghai get this impression of German beer culture.

About the bakery/cafe next door to the main restaurant: Good coffee, although once was served in a glass cup (not mug)? Pastries are very mediocre. However, the second floor seating area is really pleasant, with lots of natural light, especially in the winter-time. The blueberry danishes are probably the least-bad of the pastries.

I was very pleased with my meal. I ordered the 'stuffed cabbage' and my pal ordered the Lentl veggie soup. Both were very salty, but also fresh and delicious. I love the bread plate everyone gets as a starter- different types of soft bread with chopped liver, butter, and..get this..shmaltz (chicken fat). Yes, its bad for you..but try it! The staff is friendly, but formal. They only have 3 types of beer choices (I don't recall them having anything other than their own beer). They have an attendant outside getting taxis, which is nice. The garden is pleasant on a balmy evening. Oh, and they had a country band playing last night- but they were singing eighties songs (with a twang). They were fun, and good. Thumbs up.
