For a long time i have been yearning the '88RMB(+15%) all you can eat pizza and all you can drink beer' offer every Friday night at Acqua, but had never been able to pluck up enough energy on a Friday night to make the expedition to Pudong. However, this all changed last week with a visit to Acqua with a couple of mates.
Acqua restaurant is quite possibly housed in the blandest 5 star hotel in the world, The Gran Melia. When i went not a soul was moving, including the staff, everything was completely empty.
Anyway, Acqua is on the 2nd floor hidden in a corner but with views out over the Puxi Bund which is nice. At first glance, the restaurant seems romantic and gooey just perfect for a Friday date, but actually it holds possibly the best Friday night lads deal in Shanghai.
When you get seated by the impeccably polite maitre'd make sure you tell him you are there for the pizza deal and not a la carte, because the normal dinner menu is pretty expensive. Also dont let him pour you water because that small bottle of water is going to cost you 70 RMB. However do tell him that you want the Tiger draft beer and lots. He will load you up with a full glass in seconds and then keep replenishing it every time you drink more than 2 sips. The beer observation by this man is truly splendid.
On the pizza menu there are only 5 pizzas to choose from and im sorry to disappoint Americans they are all Italian thin crust style. But fear not, these pizzas are cooked to order, have great ingredients and are most delicate and refined. Whats better is you can order 5 at a time and the Maitr'd will not even blink. The choices are pretty standard, margarita, veg, seafood, salami, mushroom and assorted meats.
In the end, between 3 guys we finished off somewhere in the region of 18 pizzas (tip-dont feel ashamed not eating the crust, we regularly asked for our plates changed which had mountains of crust piled high).
At the end of the evening, despite feeling like pregnant pigs we were incredibly happy with the mountains of pizza and beer we had consumed. The quality of the pizza and draft Tiger for around 101rmb is absolutely amazing value in Shanghai, especially on a Friday night, even more so if its a group of lads.
