Being in Shanghai for 14 years, I can say I had a lot of food in many places here, seeing places popping up and disappearing, restaurant's owners focusing on fancy decor instead of food and price level's reaching levels representing prime location's globally.
Food ist about individual taste, that's for sure, but at least up to a certain level what everyone can say is "wow, that was great", "so lala" or "damn, what a waste".
"Wow, that was great", what I can say about Greek Taverna in Gubei. Hereby I would like to focus on the food part first, which is selective and tasty, especially it is one of the first restaurants you will stuck on ordering starters and never reaching main dishes, making this restaurant one of the only foreign restaurants eating foreign food as in the way you eat Chines way, in the "sharing way", so great for come togethers. The salads are well flavored and the taste of the different starters we had were great. Definitely go for the meatballs (koeftes).
Especially being honest also the pricing was very fair, but some dishes such as the hummus could be little more in my eyes. The atmosphaere, we were sitting on the terrace was great, very quite around you and the tradition white blue style lets you feel just comfortable. Having also the greek chef around, you will quite welcome, who also respects individual modifications to your dishes, what can be sometimes difficult in China.
For me the only thing I was little dissappointed was that if you sit at the second floor their should be a attentive waiter, for some dishes I had to get up and look for waiter, but it was worse it.
Try it out, Greek Taverna in Gubei!

I've purposely been keeping this review in the "maybe" pile simply because I didn't want the masses to know how stellar Greek Taverna is. The Hongqiao Tai Tai club knows the glory this place produces all too well, and I feel that I'd be doing the Smsh crowd a disservice by not disseminating the gospel of the Taverna.
I go here literally 2x a week (I'm not misusing literally...), spending 18 RMB from my office each way. I am a cheap-ass, so this is a statement onto itself on how good this place actually is.
Now, the top reasons to <3 the Taverna:
-The proprietor has his own farm, where all of the fresh feta they pile on your plate comes from. He also brings in all sorts of other seasonal goodies from the countryside. If you have read The Omnivore's Dilemma, Michael Pollan was basically referring to the man @ Greek Taverna as the "local food trend that needs to happen."
-Fresh everything...I challenge anyone to find a restaurant with fresher ingredients...You won't.
-The "Grilled Chicken Salad," find a better salad in Shanghai for 70 RMB...impossible. Overloaded with perfectly grilled chicken, feta, veggies, and Dolma's, Element Fresh salads are a thing of the past after you take a bite of this badboy.
-The service: The Gubei outlet has possibly the happiest, smiliest, delightful waitress this country has ever seen. In addition to knowing exactly what we want when she sees us come through the door, she re-defines "service with a smile."
-The Gyros...plentiful, succulent, and only 50-70 RMB.
-Tzaziki: Yogurt straight from the farm, and possibly stopping for a breather in heaven.
Go to Greek Taverna, stop complaining about crap Greek food in this town. You may just forego that trip to Greece with this discovery...
