Great food, warm service and down-to-earth prices, Teotihuancan has that and more. The owner Victor treats you like family, the food is cooked fresh to order and the atmosphere is clean, traditional and relaxing. Even the chips-salsa are handmade. Everything is good, even if some of the portions fall on the small side. Get a pitcher, order an assortment and let your evening cruise into the night.

Teotihuacan is exactly what I would expect from a Mexican food joint being an american from the west. The decor is fairly normal as run-of-the-mill Mexican places go.. Colorful mural type paintings, bright colored table cloths, and music fits as well.
The food is good, exactly what you for no-frills traditional food like your abuela would serve you. This is not the sexed-up fusion Mexican food we find in other places in town, nor is this the Tex-Mex border pleasing food of one of the more popular places in town. Just normal good Mexican food.
If you are looking for authentic normal Mexican dinning, then look no further.
One not of caution: portions are fairly small, price is proportional. You need order 2-3 plates to get full, 4-5 for big eaters. This pulls the price into the 100RMB range to satisfy the big eaters, not terrible.
Also another downside, you can tell the owner makes a higher margin on the drinks, and he pushes them quite a bit. Its not overbearing but you can tell he wants you to buy drinks.
If this joint was in the US or Mx, it would get a 3, but in Shanghai, where the only real competition in the price range is the new El Mexicano, it gets a solid 4 for normal priced good ol' Mexican eats.

I can only disagree with some of the editor's note; put simply i had to redress the review. For anyone who has traveled extensively across mexico or who might have a good batch of mexican friends, and not taking away from other more famous mexican restaurants in town (not always warranted) that are certainly not authentic (but for some excellent), this is easily one of the top 3 most authentic mexican venues in town; underrated and definitely superb value if you want the real experience of being there. enough said. give it a try!

This is the best maxican restaurant I've tried so far.
The food is amazing, the service is homey, and the decor, well, lots of people don't like the colour of their wall, but it doesn't look weird, so it works for me~
The magarita is fabulous because they use nice tequila, the cheeze chorizo is tasty and guilty, the burrito is very satisfying. They also have very spicy and delicious sauces.
My boyfriend and I always have a good time there and go home with a full belly. We call it the "Toe" place becuase it's real name is just mouthful, and it's so tasty, your toes curl up! :)

Went there with my wife and a couple of friends last weekend. We heard about this place from a co-worker and decided to try it out.
The place is in middle of a street with no other businesses. It feels like a neighborhood restaurant... but that perception changes once you go in. Although the decoration seems a bit 'too traditional' mexican-wise, it serves its purpose.
The food was GREAT. I have no complains at all. I will definitely be coming back with my wife or friends. I wouldn't take a date here, or even worse, someone for a business dinner. This site isn't upscale at all, but the food quality and prices beats the hell out of everything else I've tried in this city. Mexican-wise. :P

As a person of Mexican decent, I guilty writing a somewhat negative article about a Mexican restaurant but I feel like this place is close to decent and perhaps a bit of criticism could steer them in the right direction.
First of all...The Decor. Everyone should know that a Mexican restaurant only needs three things: 1. A flag of Mexico 2. Hacienda-style colors 3. That Mexican music that seems to never change or become less popular (not exactly decor). Teotihuacan has two (didn't have the music; actually, they were playing some pop music). A considerable amount of wear and tear is not out of the ordinary, and I for one, feel that it gives the place an authentic vibe.
The Drinks...The beer list is far from ideal. I would not allow beer selection to have a profound impact on my opinion of the place but it missed out on some "bonus points" by not having Mexican favorites such as Modela Negro and Pacifico. Also, judging from past reviews, their drinks are not consistent. My margaritas were very weak. A few should do the trick but it would have taken a few dozen at the rate they were pouring.
Finally.......the food. Then menu was truly inspiring. I have not seen such an array of authentic dishes since I was in Mexico a few years ago. This place is defintely not going for Southern California style food (Catina Agave); instead, they are attempting to keep it like a restaurant you would find in any town in Mexico. That being said, I really only have one complaint, but let's start with a few positives: Amazing refried beans, great tortilla chips, some excellent salsas, which were promptly refilled as I seemed to chug them. It was the mains that left me disappointed. Everyone raved about the tacos in the previous reviews; however, I found the meat in my tacos and carnitas to be quite bland and dry. When I eat tacos, I expect my hands to be covered in oil and juices from the meat and salsa. I was there on a night when they did not have any customers during our entire visit and the owner was there with just one employee. The meats may not have been prepared properly (simmered and slow cooked in sauces from a variety of chilies) as they may have thought they would be closing early for the night. Perhaps they just needed to whip something up for us that had already been put in the fridge for the night.
In terms of portion size and presentation, everything was fine but its all about that carne, the tortillas and salsas when you eat "cheap mexican". (I say "cheap" because it was 280 RMB for two people). Just three pieces and they missed out on the most important one (meat).
Teotihuacan definitely has better food than any other Mexican joint in Shanghai but I would need much stronger drinks to get me to come back because the food was just not good enough.
