We have been living in Shanghai for almost three years now and never had the opportunity to go The Cathay Room so decided to give it a try last weekend. When we arrived we thought the restaurant was in the place previously occupied by the Chinese Restaurant in the early 1990's. My wife and I had dinner there in 1990 and thought to go relive memories of our time there but found The Cathay Room much smaller and in a different location. Nevertheless we had a great lunch and our server, Jan, looked after us exceptionally well. He was attentive, helpful, spoke excellent English and every so friendly. We started with a salad of grilled octopus which was excellent. I choose the lamb as a main course but when it arrived was disappointed with the meat and Jan quickly replaced it the same dish my wife was having - fillet of beef - which arrived swiftly and was excellent. We gave desserts a miss but finished our excellent meal with a nice coffee and now have another great restaurant we can recommend and visit again. It was a shame that the western receptionist that received us and later enquired about our meal was very 'impersonal' and was definitely not having her day. Her interaction was very robotic and and a bit fake, quite opposite the genuine service we received from Jan. He was so kind to show us around the hotel afterwards and 'find' the restaurant - turned function room - where we danced some 24 years earlier!
