The food was OK, but far, far from the type of exquisite food you'd expect for a +1,100 price tag (alcohol EXCLUDED). I'm starting to think 12 Chairs won "Best new fine dining" in one of the Shanghai magazines due to David Laris owning 10 venues alreay and knowing all the right people in media, PR, marketing, etc, in Shanghai. The service from the waiter was great, though he got reprimanded by his supervisor; sad, he tried his best and did well, not +1,100kuai-good, but good enough to be the most pleasant person there. Should the management be discontent with his service it would be more professional to deal with this elsewhere so customers wouldn't notice (so in the end only the manager is the one who should get a lower rating that night).
The concept of having only 12 chairs in a dining room sounds appealing, intimate and nice. Compared to Il Nascondiglio where you get a truly real and authentic experience, and get the food cooked right in front of you, for a quarter of the price, I would never recommend 12 chairs for anything else than a business dinner, but only if you and your company will be filling up the 12 chairs yourselves.
