This is an interesting place......
Really does make me think of a concept, has it been over used or not used enough.
Needless to say Glo has a bit of everything without any floor being breath taking.
The bakery downstairs is inventive and always consistent, service is more than welcoming and the location is great.
the decor is somewhat half done, and perhaps tired...
Its competitors near by are way below lunch and dinner time offers, whilst their Sunday carvery can be somewhat inconsistent having been there 4/5 times over the last year is still worth a visit....
The 3rd floor is a mystery and feels like the ugly step sister in the attic...
The highlight for me is the downstairs bakery... offering a bit of everything and doing it well!!!!!!

I had a pretty piss poor Christmas party dinner here (think turkey like sandpaper and served with ONION RINGS) so when a mate suggested to go for their Sunday carvery rather than some eggs/bacony brunchy thing I was a bit sceptical.
BUT! It turned out alright you know! One thing I can't fault Glo for is the service. I've been 3 or four times to the grill and the French dude is always there keeping things in order and actually going around chatting to people making sure their ok.
The carvery itself though was great - choice of three well cooked meats, and the chef from the UK was there getting involved and making sure all the food coming out the kitchen was decent. The portions were huge, the tatties crisp and the yorkies big.
They had plenty of side dishes - yes bloody onion rings again, what is it with Glo and onion rings? - and I piled a lot on my plate, dad at Christmas style.
What I like the most was that the food tasted normal. Like a roast dinner I would eat in the UK. No crazy flavours, no surprises, no Chinese versions or anything. It was a proper roast just like my mum makes.
And the best part was I could go up and refill as many times as I like. Food heaven. I'd not had Yorkshire puddings for years. I'll definitely be going back to the carvery!

Really good experience - the steaks excellent, decor hip and cool. Was very busy and we were in a corner, which may have accounted for the slower service, but compared to other places (see our review of Azul), these guys rocked the house. Quit loud, but I liked the vibe - not easy for others to listen in on you! The only thing on the menu we ordered that we didn;t like was the Chicken Tikka. Indian or close to it was not - pretty mediocre. But the steak was excellent, as our the onion rings.

Twice is a charm as one might say....second visit to GLO, this time for lunch, was on for today. Set is at 100RMB for starters, main and desert including a drink.
12:30..the second Floor was empty (filled up a little more after1 h). We went for the Samosas ad Chlli Calamari rings to start with followed by a london chicken tikka and a pizza as mains. Appetizer & main are served on one plate ad the portions are not huge but totally sufficient. The Samosas were the better deal in flavour and texture, then again..calamari tend to be rubbery in most cases (sic !). The main courses were equally presented nice and delicious in taste, Great pizza dough and well presented. The curry was maybe a bit watery in texture but made up in full marks on the taste. Coffee was great together with the YUMMY Bread-pudding and the Strawberry cheesecake. The latter was OK, but a bit weak on the actual CHEESE flavour. All in all an OK deal i'd say. Will be back.

Hold up on the grease people! I went to Glo London yesterday for brunch with a friend for the first time. I ignored the comment from another friend who refused to come, because she said brunch there was not good and thought I would give it a go anyway...
Well... We are both vegetarians and were excited about the prospect of getting a vegetarian breakfast that had the usual eggs, mushrooms, hashbrowns, etc. Firstly, the service is shocking! They just leave you sitting there and don't bother coming to even give you a menu until you call them and then getting them to take the order was the next challenge and it just went on from there.
Secondly, the food - everything on the plate, including the bread was deep fried! My friend got halfway through and had to stop, because she started to feel sick and then spent the rest of the day feeling like she might throw up and I have spent most of yesterday and today in the same state. Feeling like you have drunk half a bottle of oil after you finished the meal is not something I will be going back for. I can't comment on the carvery section, but what we had was disgusting.

Not sure if it's because the restaurant wasn't busy during the holidays, or because it's new and they want to make a good first impression, but I haven't seen such huge portions in a while!
Ordered the ribs, steak, and fish (shared amongst a group, of course) which all came in gigantic sizes WITH a side of steak fries (thick & crisped to perfection), tomatoes, mushrooms, and three (exactly) onion rings. Ribs were good, tender, but sauce slightly on the sweeter side. The entrees are definitely big enough to share, and I'd suggest doing so to save room for...
Dessert! Tried the bread pudding, strawberry cheesecake, and ice cream for two. All were delicious cept the ice cream, which came w/ so much whipped cream you couldn't see anything underneath.
At about 200-300rmb/head, it's a pretty good deal to share with friends. Lovely terrace upstairs with large grill for BBQ items. Need to try the bakery downstairs too.

There is one good thing with Glo; its terrace! Had it not had a terrace the overall ratings above would be 1 on many items. The terrace is actually quite nice, the problem is that it is not always open, or they put up huge monitors and make it into a trashy sports bar. If you want a sports bar go to Camel, Blue Frog , or etc, but if Glo wants to sell itself as more classy, present more classy options to the customers.
I've been to Glo thrice.
The first time at an after work on the third floor, I stayed about 15-20 minutes, the lightning was horrible but what ruined my evening was that I could not stand the horrible music blasting (way too loud, after all it's not a night club like Mint where volumes like that are expected and accepted).
The second time I had dinner. The menu is not fine dining as the prices indicate, and the food options are boring to say the least. The service was horrendous, the staff could not answer questions and misunderstood most of what we said. when my friend's fish came out uncooked and my salad - on the menu containing cheese - but on the plate without cheese, we asked for the managers. To the managers credit they were accommodating, sent the fish back, gave us a free dessert and did the normal damage control. They were very nice indeed (they should have made sure to educate and train their staff first though).
The third time I went I left right away due to the sports crap on the terrace so the "real" third time I went, I also went to the terrace; the terrace IS nice! The experience was OK, my Kir Royal was quite bad though, not made of anything fresh, but rather some cheap syrupy juice. Many places don't offer The Alchemist or El Coctail-style coctails though, so that's acceptable (though for less quality than the Alchemist, the prices should be less too, right? but no). The third experience, evening on the terrace got an over all 3.7 rating. The first time, in the bar, maybe 1 and the second time, the restaurant maybe 1.5...
They shoot interior designers, don't they? Who ever signed off on this place should be next in line.
If you are fortunate enough to arrive before the crowd, yes the place looks great. Once you got a full second floor for example, there is nothing nice about it. Incredible bad acoustics due to the material choices and the table positions. They need to crank the aircon up to keep it pleasant, but it is a fixed outlet, so half of the room sits in a gale force wind. You leave with a headache from the noise (louder than a yum cha place), the aircon in your neck, and loose your voice yelling across your table to have a conversation. The fact that the choice of music is a drum and bass score only adds to the discomfort.
Food you ask? It's good. Excellent presentation, be it for the price they charge, you would expect a larger portion. We spend about 200rmb per person but ended up buying snacks at the bakery after our brunch. The brunch system is confusing. You are offered 'courses' and combos thereof. But if you combo a first course with a second course item, the price a la carte is less than the fixed combo price. One of the staff needed some effort to explain that we can also just order the 2nd and 3rd course only, and have the fixed price be cheaper that way.
Some of the items we ordered came really fast, others were in need of half hour. Scrambled eggs need half hour? Ah you see; that was a 3rd course item. These take longer, we were told.
The bakery was less crowded and much more pleasant to spend some time in. The offer here is not so much bakery as it is snackbar. The sandwiches look delish - and are cheap. The mini pizzas look good and are cheap = you feel you are in a different store altogether. Alas; their policy is not to mix menus per floor.
So it is a mixed bag here = the food was good, just could have been more of it (85rmb for scrambled eggs with salmon, that you scoop up in three fork loads?). The place looks good but is not practical once it is a full house. The staff is making effort and does show they are being trained and guided, but is not yet prepared to deal with questions they were not trained or guided for. Early days and I guess they need to iron out the wrinkles. But we are avoiding this place if and when it is full.

I went along to Glo London last night, Tuesday for the Rib special, which is advertised online at http://www.smartshanghai.com/event/15071
I arrived at about 7:45pm, there was one other party of two dining at the rooftop, and four waiter/esses hovering around, plus the bar manager and a cook, and an Indian chef, who I assume is in charge.
I was offered the menus for food and drink, but no mention of the Tuesday night special, after all it was Tuesday!
I ordered a half rack of ribs, and a Krona beer (why doesn’t the bar stock local Tsingtao beer?) Even in London Tsingtao beer is served, and has been for years.
The Ribs were the best I have had in town, as are the chips, the whole taste and presentation is most refreshing.
I finished my beer, again around three staff were hovering by the bar (or was it hiding), not walking about checking the two tables that had at the rooftop, I waited a full ten minutes, gave up and sent up flare, or was it the distant lighting that drew the staffs attention, I waved for another beer.
I had finished my meal and the table was cleared, no would you like a dessert or ????? so gave up, asked for the bill, which came to 285RMB, so much for the Tuesday night special of 200RMB?
Oh and what’s with the pathetic napkins, and if you serve ribs, which you generally eat with your hands, what about serving refreshing towels or a finger bowl?
Glo London has some wonderful ideas, but trying to do too much it would seem, and not directing the employees, still a bit rudderless I would say, which is sad, could be on to winner, but need to find the right skipper it would seem to navigate through the restaurant.

A solid 4. I haven't investigated the full spectrum of the place. I ended up with an hour to kill waiting for friends who had to "work late", this town and its over eager work ethic.
So I took some cocktails on the 3rd floor. Its a nice little bar area, and they had a Mojito special on, 2 for 1. Much too much ice in the drinks for my taste, is there a soda water shortage?
Joined my merry band on the second floor. The decor is nice, modern trendy. I would point out the odd fact they have a water feature behind the seats against the wall. It has lights in it, this seems risky electrically speaking, and a nightmare to keep clean.
Food arrived, their chips are really good. They are chunky, and come in a nifty metal basket. The bread and dip selection was tasty. The breads and the pizza's are served on nice chunky wood chopping boards. Pizza's are very thin and crispy, and oval - good stuff.
They have quite a substantial menu, and our waiter was very friendly and helpful.
We also had a salad to share, very nice dressing and a good portion size. My wife ordered the ribs and she assured me it was a half portion, they were massive though, and there was enough for the four of us.
Good hearty food, and not expensive.

On arrival at glo, you are a little overwhelmed as to where to start.
My curiosity started from entering their bakery while visiting the American embassy (nice location ha ha). Had a great chicken tikka pie and soup plus coffee for a really moderate price.
This led to an evening out for a friends birthday located at glo's terrace. The evening started off great, had the most amazing ribs, the meat fell off the bone, really good job. Umm, was just disappointing that it started to rain and there were no over head awnings.
Overall a great experience is to be had, will definitely go back. I hear ladies night is certainly a spectacle for any budding bachelor.

Yo Glo. Nice try. Really. I have to hand it to you..the One stop shop in one of the previous hottest locations of the french concession....well, today we only experienced solid mediocracy. Admittedly- we walzed in on sunday at 1:40 without a reservation. 3 adults one toddler (the toddler did not walz yet though). 1st point: Nobody at the reception..the bakery looked clean & friendly and 30% populated. We headed to the second floor and the friendly wait-staff told us to be patient for 10 min..the place was jam packed (and it was pouring with rain outside). Decoration? Overall..well...modern if you like pseudo-brit-80s chic. We waited one floor up in the lounge/bar area where we were told no food was served...despite there were 3 tables...with people...and food...umm..ok maybe government food testers or friends of the owners? Nevertheless we got our table. And 10 min later-after i inquired- a menu arrived. GREAT i thought and started silently choosing...and when ordering was told only brunch or carving were available. HERE'S AN IDEA: Don't ever do that again. Have a friggin brunch menu. Ok, moving on. I went for the eggs benedicte and a yoghurty drink to start. In all fairness: both were fine and 130RMB for the combination was ok. But exactly that and not better than ok. I can do average food any day of the week. Hence: Underwhelmed. Same goes for the other 2 diners (fruit/yoghurt honey appetizer & omelette as main, repectively yoghurty mango drink and toast with mushrooms). All as cooked well, sides of mushroom, cherry tomato, ruckola and grilled potatoes. Safe and unimpressive -bordering on boring. The carving station looked way more impressive and the gentleman manning it was chatty & friendly. So all in all ok service, ok decoration, ok food...but as Simon Cowell probably would say: rather forgettable.

Personally liked the decor... but everything about the food/service seemed really quite average. Not bad, but nothing rave. Some appetizers actually were quite tasty, but then the mains really weren't so good which really sticks in your mind more.
Unfortunately they do know how to make food sound good on the menu, which probably made it slightly worse that the delivery was rather ho-hum.
Particularly I was disappointed in the "hickory smoked" offerings... having tried the whole chicken + full rack of ribs, neither were particularly good and just lacked in flavor/texture. Just wasn't don't right - the carnivores left rather disappointed...
Service was average (not bad, not amazed either). Perhaps worth a trip to check it out, as I did like the multi-level concept (can grab drinks afterwards). But don't expect anything amazing that will make you say wow, i gotta come back here again.

The restaurant is located on the 1st floor above the ground floor bakery, while the lounge bar is on the 2nd floor and there’s a roof terrace on the top floor. So potentially, you could make an evening of it and have dinner before climbing the stairs for cocktails afterwards.
They’re obviously still ironing out some of the kinks, but that’s certainly not a big issue. The receptionist suggested we go upstairs to the bar to have a drink as our table wasn’t ready, but we were hungry and not in the mood for drinks just yet, so we waited a while while she went to see about a table for us. While she was doing that, one of the managers saw us waiting and without hesitation, he seated us, so I am not sure why the receptionist was so reluctant to give us a table.
The place was surprisingly busy with a mix of curious Brits as well as sophisticated locals. I’d say it was about 50/50 which is unusual for a place like this which is usually dominated by expats. I did notice a couple of middle aged western men with age-inappropriate (younger) Chinese girls as well which always amuses me.
The menu is not full of traditional English favourites so you’ll be disappointed if that’s what you’re after. It does have a few British favourites though, such as a very moist beer-battered halibut and chips, “London” cheese on toast, jam roly-poly and sticky toffee pudding. But much of the rest of the menu, whilst not strictly British, is definitely what you’ll find available in many of London’s casual dining establishments. So there’s Chicken Tikka curry, lasagne, caesar salad and other “international” dishes. Then there’s the more American style options, including ribs and chicken, which looked massive so I think I'll order that if I am in a bigger group.
I went for the lamb feta burger, which was also fairly large, as well as the calamari with sweet chili dip to start and was happy with both choices, but I do feel that I will need to come back a few more times and try some of the their dishes before making a more representative comment on the food.
Service was good apart from the initial hiccup on arrival. A receptionist’s job is so important as it’s the first impression customers get when they arrive, so I do feel they should put someone a bit more capable in that job rather than the slightly clueless girl who greeted us.
They also do a very attractive looking brunch menu which I am dying to try soon as well as afternoon tea which includes scones and sandwiches, so I’ll certainly be back a few more times in the near future.

So.. Let's first give credit where credit is due. The set lunch was kinda good. You get good-sized portions of quite tasty dishes for the money you pay.
BUT the breakfast/brunch.......... Whole different story.
I ordered the 'glo English breakfast'... The baked beans, tasted like it was from a can. The hash browns, tasted and kinda looked like it was from a pack. The sausage.. Definitely from a pack. U get one slice of bacon.. Which looked and tasted like it was just half heartedly stir-fried in oil till defrosted. U get one egg done sunny-side up. Yes.. One. U get 2 mushrooms, tomatoes and toast. Taste wise.. It was alright, I guess.. I mean how bad will canned/packaged stuff taste? The price.. 85rmb. Was it worth it? U tell me.
Well, to be fair, I'm not English, so I don't know what a typical English breakfast is like. But I think for the price they are charging, homemade hash browns would have made the difference at least.
My companion ordered Eggs Benedict. It looked good. Sure looked better than what I ordered.. And it tasted good, too.. Till he cut into the eggs. My understanding of eggs benedict is that the eggs are supposed to be poached. But the eggs he was served, was hard-boiled. Once that was brought to the attention of the head waiter, he was nice, he apologized and gave us a discount.
So over-all verdict.. Will go again for lunch but never again for breakfast.

I too waited in anticipation for the opening of this venue. I live in the area and was hoping that I would now have a western style bakery/cafe to buy bread and have coffee. Now in all fairness this review is based on a one time visit. The bread and pastries lacked something ... to put it bluntly ... taste. I don't know what ingrediends they are using but I suggest they do some serious research ... perhaps pick up some pointers from Baker and Spice. It would also help to have staff that speak at least some English.

It was with great anticipation that I awaited the opening of glo London in spite of my (now confirmed) suspicions that it did not originate in London proper. Regardless, they were renovating an eyesore of a building a few blocks away from my apartment and I spied a roof area that looked perfect for summer lounging. I'm still holding out hope for a cozy happy hour spot to emerge up top but the glo that has opened so far leaves a lot to be desired.
First off, the bakery/cafe downstairs, with its kitschy London postcards and paraphernalia at the entrance, offers a standard assortment of baked goods, coffees and smoothies. I haven't tried anything on that level yet but it seems to be option for the local breakfast on-the-go or quick lunch seeking crowd.
The third floor lounge/bar is quaint enough though it seems weird that a place pitching itself as "from London" would have such a mojito-centric drink menu.
I've only seen the roof area in the rain on the soft-opening night but like I said before, it looks promising. There seem to be a full bar and comfy seating options available.
Lastly, the 2nd floor Gastro Grill is what really left me wondering whether glo will ever sparkle. I went to Sunday brunch with friends 2 weeks in a row because whoever wrote their menu is certainly a skilled wordsmith. The descriptions sound thoroughly enticing and the semi-open kitchen in the back and several professional looking chefs in full chefs' garb promise a gourmet meal. The reality, though? Not so much. I went back the second Sunday thinking glo would sparkle with its carvery plate featuring a choice of roasted beef, pork loin or chicken plus the standard sides, but the sold out by 2:30pm. Since it's something they only do on Sundays I was rather shocked that it would sell out so early. That left me to order a brunch set again and have another so-so meal.
The brunch sets are priced rather high for what they are- 2 courses @ 130RMB and 3 courses @ 170RMB. Various fresh fruit smoothies encompass the 1st course and are fresh tasting and beautifully presented (the one with passionfruit had half a passionfruit sitting in it and the berry one was topped with fresh, whole blueberries and a mint sprig). The 2nd course has a selection of brunch appetizers to choose from. We tried the fruit and yogurt, caesar salad, french toast and pancakes. The fruit and yogurt was fresh, well-plated and had a great variety. The caesar salad was overly fishy and extremely light on the toppings of egg and avocado that were promised. And both the french toast showed promised but were literally soaked in honey. They use great tasting and obviously high-quality honey but the dousing made me feel into sugar cubes. The third course consists of a variety of egg-based choices of which we tried a veggie omelette, scrambled eggs and salmon and the big breakfast. The first 2 were rather tasty with standard sides of roasted cherry tomatoes and roasted mushrooms. The big breakfast, though, was ruined by overly processed, flavorless sausage.
The service staff are quite friendly but pretty slow as they still seem to be working out the kinks of how to properly monitor the whole floor when it gets busy. Perhaps everything will get better but for now I say lower your expectations or perhaps just wait until you can take advantage of the roof for a nice cocktail.

For it to be opened only one week already we were quite impressed that there were no major hiccups or catastophes that usually follow a restaurant/bars opening
Greeted warmly, sat promptly and shown to an almost empty restaurant. Decor is bog standard-run of the mill-flat packed-ikea ideas wooden floors and walls and the occasional twinkly of neon/uvs dotted around all 3 floors. Very 2008, very over-used and very fucking boring, but hey, we didnt go there to admire the walls. we went to eat.
Menu is heavy on american fare with some british classics just to give their flagship store and head office in London a tiny clit boner. Curries,Fish and Chips, Lasagne,Roast Chicken, Roast Beef & Yorkshire pudding. Not all necessarily true british but as close as to what Brits eat (or have stolen from other Countries when they invaded them).
To cut to the quick. Mains opted for were the Pepporoni Pizza which came out on a big wooded slab adjoined by your own personal pizza roller cutter and fork magnetically attached (Its the little things....!!) Pizza could have been crispier but for 70 something rmb filled a hole. Fish & Chips. Large wedge of real flaky cod (the halibut was not in stock that day apparantly)large steak fries in their own little metal frie cup, lemon wedge, tatare sauce and a tiny handful of chopped salad that looked lonely there on the plate all by itself next to hot food which made it sweat like a pedophile in a playground. Roast Chicken was a monster.Rmb120 Half a large chicken again with steak fries and the sweaty salad as an afterthough. The chicken was a little dry but well seasoned and could have easily fed two and lastly our group had the much touted full rack of ribs rmb220 again with steak fries and the lonely lettuce accompaniment. The ribs were a touch too smokey if we want to be really picky and the bbq sauce was a bit heavy on the cumin and curry powder which didnt help to take away some of the smokey taste but again the portion was huge and together with the carbs it came with was a event rather than a meal. But with a price tag at Rmb220 it had to be as there are better ribs at more affordable options at various locations all over Puxi.
The bar on the 3rd floor is again like a copy of many of the new bars in town decor wise boring uninspired and insipid a little like the laminated menu`s.Note to would be rest/bar owners. If your going to spend a lot of money on your place and get the best that money can buy then please don`t be tight when it comes to menu printing. Laminated menu`s are one step up from McDonalds menu`s.Again, we came to drink so decor was ignored like much of the menu which prides itself on 1000 different kind of Mojito`s.Rmb65+ If you like sweet sticky fruity drinks then you have found your ultimate playground. If you dont then your screwed and you should head to O`Malleys which is 1 min walk accross the road (Same owners/partners as Glo by the way fact fans)Kronenbourg 1664 on tap for the win and all is happy in DjSexyPaul land once again. Def worth a visit if your a portion and value for money fan. If your into something small and sinister on a large fatuous plate then this is not for you and the pretentious Bund eateries beckon. Bon Appetit

Turned up without a reservation for brunch, they accomodated us by opening the 3rd floor and within 30 minutes that level was full as well.
The food is very well presented, laid on on large plates or serving boards. We were there for brunch but saw Sunday carvery roast being brought out that looked mouth-watering. Our breakfast was delicious and looked great. Service was very attentive but not over-bearing.
I'm telling all my friends about this place, add it to the (very) short list of good brunch places in Shanghai

Came with a group of girls to try it out last Friday and returned tonight for a business dinner. I cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough.
Fish & chips (orignal cod!) is to die for - where else can you get that in China? The ribs...never tasted better. I was so impressed I actually asked the grill chef how he'd done them - but I think the slow roast then smoke pit might be a bit too much for my kitchen.
We went for the sharing plates this evening which were truly spectacular. The portions are amazing so it was a bit of a push to force a pudding in - but we did! I can recommend the strawberry cheesecake and the toffee sponge though I'm not looking forward to the scales tomorrow!
Will definitely be back soon.

Out of the 100 or so western restaurants I've tried in Shanghai, there's maybe 4 or 5 that I regularly keep going back to. Now glo London is a new addition to that list. It offers decent food, in a clean environment, friendly service - but most important, a great value. Their Pizza's are in the 70-80 range and they use quality ingredients and they taste great. Less than 50 meters away, at tourist-heaven Sasha's you pay almost twice the price, and glo's pizza is much better. Their meat dishes are huge portions. We've had the pork ribs, and what came out seriously looked like half a pork, and the two of us couldn't finish it. We took pictures, and so did the table next to us when their food came out, just because it was like "wow that's a lot of meat".
For a dessert we had some british-icecream something. Well, lets just say the Brits don't know much about good icecream, and so the dessert was disappointing. But then, with their portion sizes chances are small you'll want to order a dessert anyway. In general the food was excellent, well prepared, tasty, and very fair priced.
The only downside is that the place maybe feels too corporate and sterile to me. The interior design all looks nice, clean, slick, contemporary, but it could as well just be an airport lounge restaurant. I wouldn't take a date because the place feels too corporate. But I wouldn't go for a business dinner either because it's somehow too casual for that. But then, that's really just my personal taste - I come from a country where most restaurants are family owned and run, and restaurant concepts are not designed by marketing people and with a franchise plan in mind.
Tonight, just a week after their opening, the restaurant was full, with what seemed to be a mostly british crowd. I'm looking forward to their 1st floor bakery which should open in the next few days. I hate Baker&Spice for their prices and yuppy clientele and hope glo can offer a good alternative.
