Having heard about this place sometime ago, it’s been on my hit list for quite a while now. I finally got there with a fellow pork lover last night, my only regret is that I waited too long to go.
This place is a great place! The quality, taste and presentation of the food is well above the price paid. I was startled when our bill arrived. 3 beers, 3 starters and two mains, all for less than 250RMB. This was an amazing deal considering I felt like a 'happy pig' requiring a crane for my removal from the restaurant. I was full full full on what I ate.
We also co-incidentally met the owner (the original grumpy pig) and his charming girlfriend. She sat with us for a while (not previously realizing her connection to the place, my dining partner had worked with her before) and spoke passionately and at length about hers, the chefs, the waiters and the 'original grumpy pig's' passion for food. This passion shines through in this place irrespective of her talking about it.
The decor of the place, is simple but warm. There's a distinct vibe of cool and our friendly waiter's eye glasses reinforced the 'cool' factor. A quick visit on the way out, to the connected KIN shop next door revealed the source of the funky eyewear. Although we tried some on, we failed to look like 'cool waiter Jay' and more like silly foreigners in stupid glasses.
Anyway, enough about the glasses. Go for the food.....and if you're partial to a night of excess I'd say this place would be a great answer to a hangover too. Wholesome, tasty, filling food. Perfect!
Oh, and BTW – we were told they’d start doing brunches soon which is perfect for a post Saturday night booze up.

True to other reviews, this place IS hard to find...but if you look hard enough you can see it, and it's totes worth the discovery.
The ambience is kinda shabby chic, you know exposed wood, simple furniture, menu printed on brown paper etc etc but it works. It's not that big and when we first arrived we almost thought it was closed as there was only one other table in there, but as we were leaving at about half past eight it picked up.
The other customers were too cool for skool - you know the kind you find in Wagas, glasses with no lenses etc all on their iPads (Weibo'ing) occasionally talking to one another giving us the stare when we dared to laugh during our conversation.... 'I might not be cool enough for this place' I thought at first but after eating the food, I simply don't care, I'll go back an lower the tone every time to get me some pork.
We shared starters of the Shanghai spring rolls and prawn toast - the latter was awesome, i could've eaten it again and again and the spring rolls were ok, not bad but nothing amazing. For mains we had the signature pork sandwich and the ramen noodles. Both were delicious, but the sandwich was a little on the small side, it could be half bigger to be perfect, and the chips it comes with are pretty decent. The pork in it was so soft and juicy it melted together perfectly with the caramelised onions. NOM NOM NOM. The noodles however were awesome, really good broth and chunks of pork. The portion size for that was spot on.
We also had desserts which are not only dirt cheap but amazing. The coffee was quality too and i was surprised by the alcohol list - a good selection of beer, ale and cocktails.
All in all i reckon this would be an awesome lunch spot or light dinner, i hope they get more popular and develop a proper dinner menu as the portion sizes are not main mean sizes, so if you're famished, this probably isn't the the place for you.
I'll be going back again and again, the service was friendly, the food good and the prices low. What's not to like? (Vegetarians disregard this review. You wont like it.)

Really like this place. could kick it for a few hours in what feels like a back porch with open ceilings and lots of light coming up. chill brickwork, good vibes and music.
pork is on point. desserts too.
my only suggestion is to make the pork sandwiches a bit bigger. i could easily kill two of these. if they were 25% bigger I'd feel like I got a really good deal. also if beers were like 10RMB cheaper i'd probably order two..solid selections though.

Hard to find but totally worth it. The pork was cooked by magic and the desserts were extraordinarily well priced and executed.
Very much recommend the Tonkotsu Ramen. The pulled sandwich the best thing we tried between 5 of us (though the chips (fries) could've been less crunchy and more fluffy). Street toast okay, dumplings great with 2 different dipping sauces. The desserts were magic - 15RMB each (worth the trip already) and a big shout out to the lemon bar and brownie.
Okay beer selection, could do with some proper ales to go with that juicy roasted pork for that winter wonderland feel. I dislike giving away Shanghai secrets as this place'll be too busy to eat in v. soon (even though it was near empty when we got there, picked up around 9) but I want to see these guys do very well as they deserve it!
Also worth noting that upstairs they've got DJ kit - 7 1210 mk3's and upwards for the school on Sundays. Wandered up there and had a jam with a kid who was there learning to scratch. Excellent, Grumpy Pig is that awesome place you tell your mates back home about!

The place was definetly not grumpy but friendly and comfortable. Great to go alone or with a group of friends or a date. Well designed and relaxing atmosphere, the pork driven food was actually very good. Had the noodles and dumplings, very honest and good cooking. Maybe should had a salad or an appetizer instead of the dumplings, for me too much food. Coffee was also good and at a reasonable price. Will definitely go again. Really enjoyed it, keep up the good work.

What it is: A lovely, cozy, and succulently porky cafe that diverges from the usual sandwich-and-salad-plus-bad-lounge-music formula that seems to be so popular all over Shanghai.
I've been a long time patron of Grumpy Pig pre- and post-renovations and absolutely love their updated take on homey comfort foods. It's an especially great daytime laptop joint - greenhouse atrium, soul and hip-hop, and well-priced espresso/coffee for SH - about 15-20 RMB
Now on to the porkiness! I'm a huge fan of the 葱油拌面 congyou banmian - it's a scallion infused oil + broth that's tossed with noodles, topped with pork belly, thinly sliced egg, and cucumber. It's a pretty excellent balance of thin chewy noodle, savory caramelized pork/onion, and bright/crunchy cucumber. Yum.
The tonkotsu ramen was always pretty solid, but I have to say I wasn't a big fan of the thin Chinese noodle that they used to use - lo and behold, the last time I went in they were testing out three (3!) proper ramen noodles in different thicknesses and a newly improved broth to boot. I tried out the thickest noodle - a tsukemen style noodle - a really toothsome delicious companion to the umami-ful broth. Solid just got super solid.
Other favorites have to be the new pork street toast (I don't know what exactly I put into my mouth, all I know is that it was salty/sweet/porky/chewy/crispy deliciousness) - a porky conundrum on toast. Also, the green papaya salad (super tangy and fresh, with little watermelon batons). Oh, and the new grumpy sandwich, which is a beer braised pulled pork sandwich with bacon/onion relish and arugula. 'Nuff said on that one.
All in all, really happy to call this my regular joint. The food has definitely reached a reliable consistency, and the service is always considerate. Only sad part is that not many people are here on the weekdays. Good for me - more space to eat my pork.

Magical. Pork.
That alone should sum it up, but if you need more, I digress…
Go here, order something with Pork in the ingredients and walk out happy and satiated. Don’t forget to imbibe some of their tasty beers on hand while you’re at it.
Granted I’ve only been for lunch, but a starter and main will get you full. However, sadly, most times my table is the only one in the place. Usually for me this is a reason to turn and run, but not here. Stay, and be rewarded.
It’s obvious the chef has passion for what he’s doing because the main ingredient (Pork, just incase you needed reminding) is prepared in a way that oozes time, patience and delicate respect for this beloved animal.
A place whose originality I hope will inspire others and help bring more unique concepts to Shanghai's multiple nooks and crannies.
Not much more to say I guess…just simple, delicious, magic.
Oh, and don’t forget to appreciate the tunes…not sure what’s more soulful, the music or the pork. You be the judge.

Read the Smartshanghai article yesterday and saw how close the Grumpy Pig was to my house, so called my girlfriend and gave it a go. The place doesn't have the signage up to indicate the name change (if it does I didn't see it anywhere), so you might know it as KIN when you make your first visit. Atmosphere is a really nice and simple switch, totally warmed the place up with a brick layer and dark wood trimmings throughout.
Introduced ourselves to the man with the plan Vinh, who is the Grumpy Pig's Mr. Culinary. Very friendly, told us to pick a few mains and let him choose the starters. We chose the Tonkatsu noodle and Pho Kit, both spectacular. Tonkatsu noodle was made with a very hearty and fatty broth, and the pig stomach was thinly sliced, deelicious. Pho kit a wee rich, thinly sliced beef + came with a side of sprouts and what was either basil or thai basil, either way we didn't use the leafy greens. I liked that they brought those side fixings to choose whether you want them in your pho or not, because I don't enjoy when Vietnamese places dump that Thai basil in the pho, find it a bit overwhelming. Overwhelming like blue cheese. Anyways, came for the pork and all the pork was delicious. Pork buns, Vietnamese rice paper rolls with pork. Tasty times were had at our table.
The grumpmaster himself Gary on in full form waxing melancholy about the state of hiphop in China as we left. Grumpmaster Gary! Turn that frown upside down, cause these two little piglets left fat and happy about the state of your restaurant!

Just got to experience the Grumpy Pig tonight and I like it a lot. I had been into Kin a couple times before, and I had always enjoyed it, but they have just made every aspect of the place better. The new place just has an ambiance that is welcoming to all walks of life in Shanghai. Whether its a business dinner, afterwork cocktails, just a chilling night with friends, or a place to take your girl for a nice date; the Grumpy Pig is just one of those rare places where anyone can just come for a great experience. A friend and I started our evening off with a few cocktails, our favourite was the Cel-Rey, a gin and celery martini. In addition to the ambiance and cocktails I love the new menu. For me, I love and appreciate all things pork so the new menu is something the appeals to me. Tonight my friend and I tried the summer rolls, street toast, steamed pork buns, roasted veggie sandwich, PHO kit, and the lemon cake. Got my pork fix from the appetizers I would highly recommend the steamed buns and the new street toast was exceptional. I miss good pho from home and the Grumpy Pig can compete with anyone in Shanghai. If you are not as passionate about all things pork, the new menu has other appealing options that I'll check out in future visits. Whether or not you stop by for an afternoon coffee or you are looking to finish a rich meal, you have to try the lemon cake, its excellent! So bottom line is hit up the Grumpy Pig, you won't be disappointed.
