Amici's is an American "east coast" pizzeria chain that's actually from the country's west coast--San Francisco. This is the company's first branch in the Far East. The interior is consummately corporate, with formica and black and white glossies of celebrities on the walls. Pizza is unapologetically American. Signature pies have names like "New York," the "Philly" and the "Combo."

The weird thing about this place is that it is absolutely massive with dozens of tables, and when we went on a Friday night at prime eating time there was only 3 filled. So don't bother calling ahead..
But the pizza is really good! We ordered two 15" monsters for 4 hungry guys and it was certainly big enough. Perfectly cooked crust, delicious sauce, fresh toppings. I think it was about 130rmb for the big ones but this is pretty reasonable for the size and quality. Combining this with some Maredsous draft beers and sitting by the large window opening to the quiet street outside made for a really nice time. The service was very polite and attentive, although to be fair with only 3 other tables in this massive hall filled it's not like they were running around.
So don't be put off by its vast emptiness and give it a try. It's hard to get a good pizza in Shanghai but this place comes through with the goods!

Being from the East Coast of the US myself and specifically from the New Haven area, I was surprised to see this place pop up one block from my apartment. I was even more surprised to see a New Haven White Clam pizza on the menu which is originally from the World Famous Frank Pepe Pizzeria on Wooster St. in New Haven. However I was further surprised to find out that this chain is not even from the East Coast at all, but from the Bay Area in CA. Now, having said all that and reading through the menu where they have a "Disclaimer" on the cover indicating that they make their pies with a "Brooklyn Style" crust (ie: Slightly Blackened) and you are required to specify otherwise if you would not like your pizza made this way, my mouth began to water for that famous New Haven style pizza.
I brought a work colleague with me for the first try and we ended up speaking with one of the staff from one of their SF area restaurants who was here for staff training and we ordered a large Veggie and large Amici's Combo. Both came as promised with the Brooklyn Style crust and both my colleague, who is from New York, and I were pleasantly surprised at the quality, taste and overall yumminess of the pies.
Have been back several times since with other native East Coasters and all have agreed that this is the closest to New Haven, or if I have top say it, New York style pizza you can get in Shanghai.
My only complaint is that they could have done a better job on the interior design which definitely makes sure I know that I am in China rather than a cozy comfy hometown Pizzeria (They do however have some cool reto photos on the wall). Overall pretty darn good pizza for Shanghai and would recommend to anyone who likes classic New Haven or New York style pizza.
