Formerly located on Donghu Lu, Madison is a contemporary American restaurant, by young chef-owner Austin Hu. Hu cut his teeth at NYC's Gramercy Tavern, and has brought his locavore mindset, and classical training to bear, with this casual fine dining restaurant. The new space is bigger, brighter and more open than the previous location. Hu has also expanded the concept with Madi's, a casual bar with a menu of sandwiches, salads, small bites and snacks.

I will keep in short, sweet and sour. We had an array of starters varying with a mix of salads, Bruschetta and some wonderful stuffed riced balls. All fresh and pumped full of taste. 1-0 to the Starters
The mains - Opted for the friend chicken which if you could find the any chicken you were doing well. There seem to be an unnatural abundance of deep friend skin, so when you did finally find some chicken it was on a par with producing gold the Alchemist way.
We also opted for the non artery blocking chicken. Slicing into this was like recreating a scene from Psycho as the blood poured out. This was sent back never to be seen again. RIP
Finally the pork ribs - although using the word pork you could be had on the trades description as there was none. It was pure fat. Nothing else.
    Still 1-0 to the Starters.
On the whole for a restaurant which I have only heard good things about very disappointing when it came to the main event. It wasn't overly busy so no pressure on the Kitchen so really no excuses.
On the plus side the chap who looked after us was a real trooper and did a great job. Chef take note.

We were there for brunch and totally spoilt for choice. The smartest part about the menu is they broke down every single item in your big breakfast into individual choices and I think that's where the brilliance comes in.

The choices for eggs were not small and the menu is eloquently written - totally mouth watering just staring at it. We ordered the coddled egg with tripes and also the slow roast duck egg wrapped in meat. As a start. Both the egg dishes were brilliantly executed and I would always put respect for chefs who takes the time to innovate on simple food like eggs into a whole new experience. The coddled egg with tripe were cooked in tomato and swirling the softness of the eggs together with the crunchiness of the tripes does create magic. Equally amazing was the duck egg, wrapped in meat and slowly cooked to perfection. I like it because it's not a dry piece of rock (normally if not done right, it tend to be really dry) and very well marinated. While the excitement of the eggs is still lingering in my mouth, our other small plates began arriving. For our next experience, we ordered a home-made pork sausage and a simple burger.

Okay, there were two of us but they obviously prepare the food to be shared because they actually took the time to cut our burger into 4 pieces. The burger is very juicy, dancing with flavour and gives you a comforting weekend feeling. The home-made sausages were very well made and in normal circumstances, I would fear sausages because the amount of sodium they put in there. This time, I'm surprised the sausages are not too salty and can be eaten on its own without other accompaniment.

It seems like we're done with brunch until I saw my neighbouring table receiving this amazing looking scone, with huge pieces of butter glazed with icing sugar. What the hell, its weekend ... we ordered a cinnamon roll. The roll came with a thick white sugar glaze and immediately send a sugar rush just by looking at it. While the cinnamon roll is perfectly made, I did felt the sugar glaze is a tad too much ... perhaps less is more next time.

Overall, extremely happy with the start of our weekend with such a spoilt for choice experience, we left the restaurant by booking for 6 person for the next weekend. Will need to bring more people to complete the entire menu before we're truly truly satisfied.

My husband and I went for an early dinner last night to Madi's, the casual dining venue at Madison on Fenyang. It was our first time there, although I had been to a luncheon at Madison a year ago.

Wow. To start, the service was the best we have experienced after 3 years in Shanghai. Our server was attentive and very helpful during ordering, and actually cared whether our food was to our liking after it was served (!).

And the food, simple pub fare, was to die for. We started with French onion soup (delicious) and Mac and cheese, followed by a burger and fried chicken. I don't know what they put in that burger, but it was great! My husband said the same of the chicken.

We went early, 7:15 on a Saturday night, and no reservation was needed. By the time we left, it was filling up, so a reservation might be advisable. We are so happy to have found a new neighborhood gem!

We've been going to Madison for sometime now, and have really liked their brunch. Last week though, the experience was almost like a slap across the face.

We went for brunch, didn't have a reservation so were asked to wait 30 mins, pretty reasonable. Returned in 30, ordered our food (3 dishes) and the wait began. My friend got hers, finished it... people who ordered after us also got theirs (and finished) but the rest of our food never came. In the meantime we asked the wait staff 3-4 times for the rest of our dishes, finally the food arrived, one dish wrong, the other one cold. It was obvious it had been sitting for a while.

We asked for the manager to complain, first the staff just ignored us. When we persisted, were told that there no manager that day. Eventually we walked out, hungry... dejected... sad for fact that we'd lost one of our favorite brunch venues.
