Issimo and Matto executive chef Enzo Carbone has developed a sterling reputation in Shanghai for his authentic Neapolitan style pizzas. Now he's applying that expertise to steaks and chops at Capo. The centerpiece of the restaurant is a twin oven constructed with imported brick and mortar by an Italian artisan and his apprentice son. Cuts of meat are placed on small cast iron grills, shoved into the oven, and come out with a layer of smoky char that seals in the juices. In addition to steaks and pizzas there is a crudo bar serving freshly-shucked oysters and other premium shelfish. The menu also offers a vast selection unique antipasti like roasted bone marrow as well as homemade pastas.

First of all, this is one of those places where you have to know where you're going to find it, and the implication is, if you aren't in the know, you probably don't belong here.

So it already had a strike against it when we got to the 5th floor, found ourselves in club Muse, and had to flag someone down to ask for directions.

At the restaurant itself, we were not seated immediately, despite a long-standing reservation and my previous communications that we were a group celebrating a very special birthday. Eventually I had to go into bitch mode and demand why were had been left languishing at the bar, without a single glance or offer of a drink.

To be fair, the reaction to my complaint was immediate and conciliatory. I was ready to give them a second chance.

But then...the food. It's just not that good. Incredibly mediocre salads, forgettable pizza, uninspired sides. The steak was the high point--really nice, perfectly cooked, flavorful without overpowering the quality of the meat. But since Shanghai has several other places who know how to do steak now, I can't recommend Capo.
    AMAZING STEAK! Done just right!

I went to Capo with a friend and met her first at the bar for a cocktail. I was impressed by their cocktail list. The drink I had was a bit too sweet but delicious none the less, would stick to my classic cocktails if I went back. We then took a seat and ordered, to start, the tuna tartar and the aged ham and melon plate, both were great but it took a while to get a glass of wine. After that we shared a light pasta that was done impeccably well. We could have stopped there but we came for the steak..... ugh THE STEAK!! Cooked in the apple wood and charcoal ovens visible at the end of the restaurant (giving the vibe a cozy, real italian feel) made my tenderloin steak one of the best steaks I have ever had, hands down! I would stick to the thicker cuts of meat, as my friend got the strip steak which was still tasty but just could not compare!! My steak was charred on the outside and perfectly medium rare on the inside- sealing in all the juices and flavors - which were drawn out even more by the sea salt served with it. we got two sides, sauteed greens, and the potatoes. Both huge portions served family style. for two people would recommenced getting one side but its hard not to get a potatoes and vegetable with steak. all in all i think that the quality of food for the price and location is great, there is a wide variety of options so you can go crazy or just try a few things and keep it a reasonable (fancy) dinner. have recommended it to friends and while most were wowed with the food have said similar things about the service being a little slow and not 100% on top of their game.

Shanghai has a lot of great restaurants from all around the world-- Capo Restaurant was one of the best dining experiences I have had in this city to date! As a regular diner my Italian palate is...shallow. When a couple of friends invited me to this restaurant all I wanted was maybe some spaghetti, garlic bread and a decent setting. This restaurant over-delivered and did it well. The restaurant is a little hard to find however walking in you know its the right place. Intimate but comfortable dining decor and lighting perfect for a date or a chill night with friends. The menu provides a nice set-up from the antipasti dishes to the mains and if you have any room for dessert (which we did not and looking at the other dessert tables it was our lost) you can achieve a full dining experience. We started with a great tuna tartar and fresh baked bread with roasted garlic bulbs with oil, vinegar and rock salt. Delicious. We didn't fill up on the bread as we shared two great pasta dishes (not spaghetti), Buratta salad with fresh arugula and duck proscuitto. Our main dish, the first and signature dish of mains, was a bit expensive but well shared between my friends and I with plenty of delicious sides like roasted potatoes and seasoned and grilled vegetables. Everything tasted so good and we had a good time to boot. The staff is very friendly and attentive but not too intrusive. I plan to go back and make my way through the entire menu as I am sure everything will be just as delicious. Happy Dining!

Had a fantastic dinner at Capo last Thursday. The food was delicious - we ordered the burrata to start: which was creamy and sublime. Then the house special - the fiorentina steak. This was amazing - I never had such a tender cut of meat before. We were told that the owner has a share in the Australian wagyu beef farm so you can't get it anywhere else. I would come back just for this. We had a couple of delicious pasta dishes too to round off the meal. The cocktail and wine lists were extensive too although we didn't drink much. Another plus was the service - very prompt when we needed it but unobtrusive when we didn't. I would certainly recommend it. Perfect for a date.
