The Nepali Kitchen has some of the best spicy food I've yet had in Shanghai and I've had some VERY good spicy food!
You know that fine line between overly spicy (where you lose flavour) and barely spiced - Nepali Kitchen understands that border very well and provides delicious, flavourful food for a ridiculously good price!
The best way to enjoy it is with a group of friends. The atmosphere is definitely not suit-and-tie (lounging on pillows?) and maybe for a formal date you might want to go somewhere less laid back but bring 3 or 4 of your friends and you are set! Plus that way you can order enough different menu items to really experiment.
Sure they allow smoking. Everyone does in Shanghai. But you still have to eat and this is a fun place to do it!
The building itself is also a treat; there are private rooms if you need to book for a party or different floors for groups of patrons.
I'd recommend calling in advance if you aren't physically capable of the stairs, just to make sure they keep room for you on the main floor.
