This is the Shanghai branch of a hip tea "cafe" from Louisville, Kentucky. The focus is proprietary tea blends and tea-infused spirits. Supplementing that is a menu of southern-style grub like pulled pork with cornbread pancakes or shrimp and grits.

The sterility of the Taikang Terrace complex is finally starting to wear off, though it’s veering a little far in the other direction, replaced by the stench of what smells like drunken yokel urine.

If that’s a necessary evil of having Hillbilly Tea in the building, then consequences be damned. This place deserves three inbred thumbs up.

The pork and pone sounds like a sex act, and it tastes even better. And the thick, crisp-edged pancakes with tea butter and some kind of pumpkin sizzurp are the kind of thing tastebuds and clitorises post on their Instagrams.

A cautionary note: like the news that Charles Manson is bisexual, the hooch tea sounds like a good time, but it’s pure malice. Tasty, tasty malice.

It's always a little concerning eating in a place where you are the only patrons but we left Hillbilly Tea wondering why no one else was there.

The restaurant has a good atmosphere, although it could perhaps use some more air-conditioning (but nothing a bottomless iced tea can't sort out!).

The menu was not overwhelmingly big as seems to be very common in SH but was interesting enough to not make you feel like there weren't any options.

The food was delicious and while the portions are on the smaller side, the price makes it understandable. I had a flank steak which was cooked to perfection (RMB69) and a crisp watermelon, arugula and goat's cheese salad (RMB58 I think).

Will definitely be back to try some of the other dishes on offer.
