Burger News of Great Import: Carl's Jr Opening Second Shop

By Christopher St Cavish, Jun 12th, 2010 | In Nightlife

Like a charbroiled burger patty flung against a wall, greasy Carl's Jr has slid down Nanjing Lu. The American burger chain -- a step up from McD*cks and Burger Wang -- will open their second shop in Corporate Wujiang Lu. (The first is in People's Square.)

The signs are up. The timeframe is: "Coming Soon."

It looks like the second wave of this Wujiang Lu strip, wherein the owners kick out the underperforming suckers and update and "upgrade" -- Papa John's, an imminent Baskin Robbins, and something called Ramen Play, from the conglomerate that brings us BreadTalk (and Carl's Jr.) -- is underway.

I'd suggest Makotoya's BBQ pork rice bowl instead. It's a fast-food Japanese ramen shop, on the second floor of Wujiang Lu, and their 28rmb bowl of sweet BBQ pork, short grain rice, toasted seaweed, a sunny-side up egg, chives, and a thick chili paste is one of the best things to eat in the area. Makotoya is on the second floor of the westernmost mall, between Coco Curry and the Yang's Fry Dumpling.

Here's something to ponder over this lazy weekend. It will eventually cross your mind as you wander down Wujiang Lu looking for something to eat. Which is more destructive to your arteries: four of Yang's grease-filled shengjian bao, or a SuperStar with Cheese?

(Important Update: Signboards also up somewhere in Xujiahui for a new Carl's, according to important sources. That'll make three.)
