Expanding Universe: Constellation #3
By Christopher St Cavish, Mar 17th, 2010 | In Nightlife
Word comes in today from the insiders at bar industry magazine Drink that Bar Constellation is adding a third location (or fourth, if you count the owner's wife's bar). This info is in Drink's March issue, which will be showing up in the hands of your local bartender this week. Constellation #3 -- no word if it's going to hew closer to Formula #1 or Formula #2 in size, decor -- is going in "next to Napa Wine Bar & Kitchen" (who recently got a new chef), near People's Square. That should be Jiangyin Lu, which, I've found out this morning is also the cross street for this Urban 18 downtown indoor golf project. And a new Wagas, but no one's counting those anymore.
Anyway, Constellation Number Three is going to focus on bourbon, a fine, fine spirit. Number two will remain single-malted, and number one will focus on exposing all the lint on your shirt via their blacklight.Drink also says that Constellation is opening in Beijing, where I've just spent a few days taking in the capital's depth and attending landmark cultural events, like the China debut of Fatburger. Yep, Beijing has a Fatburger. It's just OK. But that's not the point.
We're sending you Constellation, Beijing. Constellation! The pride and joy of people who value a veneer of cocktail suavity.... The least you can do is give us a Fatburger, or maybe that Karaiya joint, the upscale Hunan place from Alan Wong (see: Haiku / Hatsune). A Japanese butcher, with a hot-pot place hidden behind, like Chaoyang's Niu Xuan An, would be nice. How about a pedantic neo-American cocktail bar like Apothecary, to match with our el Coctel? Better Yunnan food?
But, instead, your last big contribution to this city was LAN.
And I think you know how those types of places make us feel, Beijing: like a drink at Constellation.
