Why Not? Russian Donut and Pirogi Shop on Changle Lu
By Christopher St Cavish, Mar 31st, 2010 | In Nightlife
Me: "Why are you opening a Russian donut and pirogi shop on Changle Lu?"
Anton: "Because Shanghai have everything but no Russian donut."
And so Ponchiki was born. Anton is a powerfully built Muscovite. His 3rmb fried Russian donuts are dusted with powdered sugar and drizzled with condensed milk. The small storefront isn't open just yet but the hot donut I had this afternoon was tasty. A sad-looking Russian lady made it. She also makes pirogi for 4rmb.
Opens for real on Tuesday. If you pretend you're Russian (or a writer), you can blag your way in.
